Disappearing Mail

Postby powerwalk » Fri 05 Sep, 2008 7:24 pm

A friend of mine just lost all the email from an inbox sub folder in Thunderbird. This is the second time in six months that email has simply disappeared from this folder. The first time it happened, she had a recent backup of the Profile Folder, so it wasn't that big a loss. This time, there wasn't a backup. I should mention she is reasonably computer literate.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be going on here....or if there's a way to bring up hidden mail.

All input appreciated.

Why a subfolder, I am not sure. It sounds like the doings of an AntiVirus program, which may find something objectionable in the folder, and took the entire thing to the Vault, or whatever it is called. Norton would be a primary candidate.

Disappearing Email from Sub Folders

Postby powerwalk » Sun 07 Sep, 2008 8:35 pm

Thanks for the input, Fulvio, I appreciate your time and efforts to help.

Found the answer. Somehow the Folder settings were changed.. Right clicking any folder and choosing Properties/Retention Policy brings up options on how long to save messages. It was changed from "Don't Delete any Messages, to "Delete message more than 30 days old."

I'm assuming this happened during the update process to Thunderbird Very strange, I haven't experienced this problem, but at least I now know where to look if I ever do.
