As announced in today's Apple "Let's Rock" Event, Apple released iPod touch Software 2.1 to iPod touch users. Apple will release iPhone Software 2.1 for iPhone users on 12 September.

iPod touch 2.1 corrects problems where sandbox application restrictions were not properly enforced, maliciously crafted font data could lead to arbitrary code execution, forged DNS information could be provided to mDNSResponder, TCP connections could be spoofed, and a WebKit flaw could lead to to arbitrary code execution when visiting maliciously crafted Web sites.

Unlike iPhone/iPod touch Software 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates, Apple described the changes and new features in detail. (see below)

This version of the software includes the following improvements and supersedes all previous versions.

  • Genius playlist creation
  • dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
  • improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
  • faster installation of 3rd party applications
  • fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
  • faster loading and searching of contacts
  • other bug fixes
