Losing my AOL home page

Postby KathyM » Fri 19 Sep, 2008 10:03 am

Hi - today is my first day here and I am sure hope that someone can help me. I have searched the forum regarding this problem and found nothing relevant, so here goes:

I am using FF 3 and ever since I upgraded I keep losing my aol home page. Even if I close it and reopen it it doesn't come up the way it should. I have even down the FF3 download again and keep getting the same problem. What is causing this? and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

The Options|General show show: Show my home. If there is only the AOL open (no other tabs), select Current Page. After closing Firefox, and reopening you should get the AOL page.
But, if you had the greetings page from Mozilla, or anything else, and did not select Current page, you will always get the old page. The AOL page should be in the Home Page line.

I did all of the above. When aol opens it comes up in a different form. All the links are on the left , there are no graphics and no mail links, either aol mail or g mail. I have shut FF down several times and it still happens. It never did this before I upgraded to FF3. Is there a bug of some sort? Thanks

I, never had an AOL home page, so I would not know what you were seeing, but what I see looks perfectly normal. I am using this page, which is the standard AOL page with the local weather. There are plenty of graphics, as for the links, I don't think that it is anything unusual. Also, I don't have G-mail, but I get Yahoo and Aim mail.
Is my page anything like yours?

1. At: Tools > Options > Content --- is 'Load images automatically' checked?
2. At: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies --- remove all the AOL cookies
3. Is an anti-virus program running? Does the error persist if the AV is temporarily disabled?

When I clicked on your link it came up with just text and no graphics. ( http://www.aol.com/)...now when I take this link and copy & paste it into AOL it comes up normal. The AOL home page came up normal this morning and now it is gone again. This is what I get when my home page goes whacky - just text links on the left and no graphics. This is crazy - I also checked everything in tools/options and it shows aol as my home page - I also disabled my AV and it still comes up whacky......any other suggestions? Thanks :)

(Diagram

1.Drag the AOL icon up and drop it onto the "House" icon at the top this browser window.

2.Select "Yes" from the pop-up window.

That's it You're done!

I don't rely on a single home page. Generally, I use two tabs, but the AOL page has worked fine for me, and it is, now, my home page in FF3.0.1.
If I come up with any idea, I will post it.

OK, you've got a doozy there. More things to play with --

1. Clear the cache: Tools > Options > Privacy - at bottom
2. Bring up FF in Safe mode: that is, don't use the desktop icon.
- Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)
3. The old 'Plan B': Create a new Profile.
- For this, you may have to change the desktop icon.
- At the end of the string "C:\Program Files\Mozilla[etc.]\firefox.exe", add a [space] -P. Note that this follows, is outside of, the string in quotation marks.
- The tail end should be ...\firefox.exe" -P

Kathy, don't go crazy. Yet. a) You're too young; b) Save that for contesting with teenagers.

Kathy,
close Firefox, and, then go to Start|Run|"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p , with a keyboard space after the final quotation mark. If you enter this, the profile manager will come up. You, probably, have only "default", on the write side. On the left, there are three buttons, one is "Create Profile". You want that one. Enter any name other than "default". Even "default1" is ok. The path can be anything you want, including the Desktop.
When you are done, you can write click|Properties, and append the Target line with -p default1. You should have: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p default1, with a keyboard space after the "p". From now on, Firefox will open in "default1". Play around with it, and if you don't like, you can always remove the "default1".
I use the same desktop shortcut, and, if you choose to leave out the extra direction, you can select the profile which you want, when you want it. I would uncheck the box under the profiles list.

Please refer to this link, old but still good. The location for FF3, is like that of FF1, and 2.
But, I would try first Bookmarks|Organize bookmarks|Import and backup|Restore|Choose file|point to the latest daily backup file of your "default" profile. I, never, had to do anything like this, but, it may be simpler, this way. It may work from importing (or copying) the .html file.

Let's first work on whether or not the AOL problem is solved.
- If necessary, from the 'failing' profile copy to a piece of paper the URL (address) that fails.
- Bring up FF with the testing profile, and put in the URL.
-- Still a failure? Then the problem likely is outside of FF.
-- If AOL is now ok, then we'll work on getting the Bookmarks transferred.

Some references:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox - self explanatory
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mozilla_Firefox - middle column, second section down

Ditz? no! We're all happy to help a damsel (guys welcome, too) in distress.
= = = = = = =
Semi off-topic to readers: A long time back I discovered that Thunderbird installation automatically created in the ('start') menu folder a 'Profile Manager' shortcut, and Firefox didn't. So when these shortcuts are replaced, and when I do an install of FF for friends, I create another shortcut.
(In XP, look in folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Mozilla Firefox.)
I copy the 'Safe Mode' shortcut and: 1) change the name, 2) modify to the " -P".
