New great source for free legal downloads of music

Postby richard mitnick » Fri 24 Oct, 2008 11:48 pm

I am staying up nights, building out a digital recapitulation of the Jazz influences I learned listening to a great 24 hour Jazz station in Philadelphia 1964-1967, WHAT-FM, a 24 hour station. The big guys were Sid Mark and the now late but still great Joel Dorn, who went on to a Grammy winning career as a Jazz producer.

I am using Spiralfrog.com. This incredible sight has millions of tracks, Jazz, Pop, I saw no Classical where i also have a huge collection, nor any Opera.

The tracks are DRM protected WMA, but there is software elsewhere to convert to mp3.

Lest anyone have any worries about using the DRM cracking software, the last issue of Windows Secrets had a whole section on the stuff.

In the US, there is the question of fair use, which means I only use it for myself. This was settled in the famous (or infamous) Sony Betamax case, when VHS came out.

Back to work.

While I would personally agree with you that removing DRM should be considered fair use, I still have to note that under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, section 1201, circumventing it is indeed illegal, and that the RIAA has showed us that they're completely willing to sue you for $9250 a song for a DMCA violation.

You'd probably also want to check out the terms of service of both the site and the software they're using, which I'm fairly certain will re-state the same thing.

Here is a recent advert at the highly respected Windows Secrets. Also, read Paul Thurrott's What I use at the Windows Supersite, especially his description of Tubebite.
