Hello All,

Recently I set up a network at my grandmothers, basically to share files between to desktop computers (XP Home SP3 [Both]) and my Laptop (Vista x64).

Now, the odd thing is, that on my laptop, I am able to access files on both computers, however, on either XP, machine if I try to access files on the other XP machine or my laptop, I get this error message:



I am confused as to why this is happening, and I have tried everything I can think of.
Everything except my laptop is not password protected, and even when I enter the password for my laptop, I still get the same error message.

EDIT: File and Printer sharing is enabled on all machines, and I am able to print from all machines as well.

Verify that across the network:
- the workgroup name is the same
- each computer name is unique
- The XP machines' network definitions were done correctly. On the Network Setup Wizard:
-- first active panel - select Other (third option)
-- second panel - select first option (network hub)
- These are the options available on XP Pro; I hope that XP Home is the same.

How is the printer connected in?

You have read through the Help and Support materials.

There are several areas of definitions that must be set up. Re-post if you want excruciating details.

Off-topic note: See this article for a nifty XP SP2/3 add-on. It allows a Vista machine to see a complete network map that includes the XP systems. (It is already included in Vista.)

Can you connect via \\IP Address?
Can you ping the system?
Have you tried pinging the loopback address of the NICs to make sure they are functioning correctly?
Are your IP, DNS, Gateway and Subnet Mask set correctly?
Is your router configured properly for DHCP if you're using it? If you are using static IP addresses, is DHCP disabled?

This problem has been resolved. File and Printer sharing was not properly enabled.
