Problems installing ATi drivers on Windows 7

Postby TuN » Sun 12 Apr, 2009 12:17 pm

My Windows 7 have automatically installed WDDM 1.1 driver for my Sapphire HD4850 1 Gb.

The problem is that those drivers don't support OpenGL -> I can't play CounterStrike.

I'm using build 7077, and in build 7068 I was able to install the Catalyst 9.3, I'm unable to install it now, same errors with Catalyst 9.4.

When I was on 7057 build, I had no ATi drivers yet, and I upgraded normally on build 7068. Then I got the ATi Catalyst 9.3, and when I wanted to upgrade my Windows, it said that it recommends me to remove ATi Catalyst drivers, or system might be unstable. So I have removed it, upgraded to 7077, now I can't get them to work.

I have tried upgrading Windows driver over Device Manager, but when I locate the driver, I get the message that the newer driver is installed:

If I run Catalyst 9.4, it installs normally, doesn't show any errors, but on reboot, I get this error:

I'm begging you to help me :(

Nice system! :) I'm still on the old Core 2 Duo platform. :(

Unfortunately I've not run an ATI video card on Windows 7, as my main system has a Geforce card in it so I might be of only limited assistance.

Have you tried running Driver Sweeper to clear out the old drivers before attempting to install the Catalyst 9.4 package?

Another thing to try is going into the device manager and forcing the INF driver file to be installed. The INF files are in the C:\ATI drivers directory after being unpacked by running the installer.

Thanks :)

You should definitely install Windows 7 (I hated Vista, loved XP because of speed), and Windows 7 has Vista's graphics & funcionality with the speed of Windows XP. It's demands aren't that high, but I don't know which graphic card do you have, so.. :)

Anyway, I have managed to fix my problem. I have went to Device manager -> Update driver -> "I have a disk" -> Located my .inf file, and voila.

But I have previously tried that, and when I have selected the same .inf file, no graphic card was listed, so I was unable to continue with update..

I know I have disabled the driver that Windows 7 has automatically installed, but I'm far from being sure that this thing solved my problem.

Anyway, thanks for the help, sorry for english and take care :)

I already am on Windows Seven. I liked Vista too, but Seven is even better. Even in a beta form it's incredibly stable and very fast. :) All my hardware works flawlessly, and I've noticed lower memory use than when under Vista.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. :) I have the GeForce GTX 260 and the drivers have been working flawlessly under Seven. I'm getting fantastic performance, even at the higher resolutions.

I've contemplated the upgrade to the i7 platform myself, but that would involve buying an expensive X58 motherboard and DDR3 memory (though the cost of DDR3 has come right down). I might hold out a while longer, in the hopes of motherboards getting cheaper. :)

Welcome to the forum, and I hope you enjoy your stay! :)
