Best graphics card on New Egg for under around $75?

Postby stoperror » Sat 11 Apr, 2009 11:18 pm

This cheapo 8800 I got back in August is dying and the manufacturer is not responding to my emails, so I guess it's time for me to get a new graphics card. My question is: What is the best graphics card for around 75 on New Egg?

The Radeon 4830 is quite a good card. This MSI card is a hair under $75 USD after a $20 rebate. The comparable Nvidia card is the Geforce 9800 GT. The cheapest one I could find was this one. The 4830 is cheaper so I'd be more inclined to go for it over a 9800 GT.

However, my own advice would be to spend a bit more. The $160 -> $180 USD range can fetch you a Radeon 4870 1GB or a Geforce GTX 260. Both of these cards have substantially more graphics power than the Radeon 4830 and Geforce 9800 GT which would be quite helpful if you are running at a higher resolution. If you are running at something like 1280x1024 then by all means the 4830 should be a great card.

Here's a good article on AnandTech that compares the 9800 GT and 4830.

This TechReport article compares the 4870 1GB and GTX 260.

Actually 1440x900, so I'll go with the HD 4830.

Nice. At that resolution the 4830 and it's 512MB ram should offer terrific performance. It's amazing how much graphics power you can get for under $100 USD these days! :)

That's partly the reason why I went for the 1440x900 monitor. Oh, and it was a bit cheaper.
