MacOS on a regular pc legally?

Postby NikoBellic » Tue 14 Apr, 2009 2:09 pm

I understand that since Apple moved all their Mac computers to Intel processors a few years ago, there have been efforts to create versions of the OSX to run on ordinary pc's. Having read about them, I've come to understand they're mostly illegal and infringe heavily upon Apple's copyright.

Although I have recently found out about a device called e-fix that claims to allow a standard genuine copy of OSX you can pick up from any Apple store to installed and run on a regular non-Apple made computer, from likes of Dell, HP or others. I was wondering if this gadget is actually illegal or not

I won't post a link a web-link to the e-fix site here, in case it's considered spamming, and especially since this message board is very Apple friendly. :mac: :)

I believe the EULA states that it may only be run on an "Apple labeled" computer, which is pretty generic. Can I draw an Apple on the computer? And it may be considered a workaround to copy protection which means you're violating the DMCA.

Short answer: no.

Mac OS X is designed to run on Macs from Apple Inc.

Since the current range of Macs are technically not much different from ordinary pc's, that strikes me as a little anti-competitive. Especially since Microsoft aren't stopping Mac owners from slapping a copy of XP or Vista on their iMac or MacPro systems?

With regards to software license agreements, on any commercial software, not just Apple's OSX, are they even a legally enforceable documents? As "stoperror" pointed out, Apple's license agreement mentions "Apple labeled computers" rather than specifically a Mac computer made by Apple.

At the end of the day though, whatever the legal status of the E-fix device maybe, it still ensures sales of OSX, rather than illegal freebie downloads of the illicit versions. It'd be little short of petty if Apple were to weigh in with legal action against it.

Mac OS X is designed to run on Macs made by Apple Inc. Apple and Mac users are very happy with such beautiful integration as Mac users know that the hardware and software are nicely integrated together, hence great functionality and stability.

If you've been following Apple news, it is not hard to know that “anti-competitiveâ€
