slow business computer

Postby James » Tue 13 Jan, 2009 12:10 pm

I've mentioned our computer at my place of business before. The IT person (in Tennessee) will not give us an updated AV program (we are online) and as a result, our definitions are over two years old. It's ridiculous but such is reality. Anyway, I have CCleaner on the computer. I tried Comodo but it slowed the computer down to nearly a standstill so I removed it. Currently the only protection we have is Windows Defender... period. The computer runs quite slowly and I'm wondering about a couple of programs: Glary Utilities and PC Decrapifier. I try to keep the computer's cache cleaned and the hard drive defragged on a monthly basis. Beyond that... ????

Just a suggestion out of nowhere, try to screw up the computer hence your IT technician to perform a re-installation?

Ha! You're a riot, Antony. Truly, I would love to do just that. He's in Tennessee and I'm in Oregon so that's not going to help us much. The fact is, they just don't seem to care so I suppose I shouldn't care either. I've pretty much decided to simply leave the computer alone and let happen, what will inevitably happen. Anyway...thanks.

Is this a workstation or server? If it is a workstation I would resinall the workstation and install what programs you need for work. If it is a server I would talk to upper heads and have them switch to a manged dedicated server company. We used Server Intellect for our office server. Host our company website, file share and VPN setup. They pretty much keep the server up and run malware and virus scans each month or as needed. Plus if something goes wrong we don't have just one guy we have a whole department that can look at it. I would fire that tech you got.

James,

You could install the free version of Avast and with Windows Defender you would be all set.
Just register the Avast as if you are a home user.

I have tried Avast and AVG in the past and did not have much luck with either. McAfee which is provided free from my ISP, also bogged down the system.

I use Avira AntiVir Personal now, which is Avira's free version. Basic anti-virus protection, AntiVir Personal is licensed for home-use only, it cannot be used in a commercial environment.

Another option would be to remove Windows and install a Linux distribution. :)

Hello, Edward

After much complaining, the IT person purchased Kaspersky for the entire corporation. So... we now have Kaspersky Internet Security suite installed.

Well done!

BTW, how is Kaspersky?
Most of you know that I run Windows under Parallels Desktop for Mac. It comes with Kaspersky Internet Security (and 12 months subscription to it). I tried it but I uninstalled it and put AVG Free back on.

Well, when I use Windows under Parallels, I don't get connected often.
