It would be helpful if you could give us as much of the following information as you are able:

  1. What operating system you are running (e.g. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X Leopard, etc.)
  2. What browser you are attempting to install Flash for (e.g. Internet Explorer 7, Netscape Navigator 9, etc.)
  3. Where you downloaded the Flash installer from

Your best bet is to use Adobe.com's download page, which can automatically detect most of this information, and direct you to the appropriate installer package.

If you launch Netscape and type "about:plugins" (without the quotes) into the address bar where you usually type a Web address, does the resulting page mention Flash anywhere?

In Internet Explorer 8, go to Tools and then click Manage Add-ons. Towards the lower-left, there will be a drop-down menu labeled "Show"; from it, choose "All Add-ons". Does "Shockwave Flash Object" show up anywhere in that list?
