EMAILS - HARD DRIVE BACK INTO MESSAGE CENTER ON NETSCAPE 7.2

Postby OPDVD » Sun 05 Jul, 2009 7:09 pm

This is the 2nd time I have done this.

The first time the "Netcape Support Center" still existed and a young man "walked" me through recovering the contents of my "Message Center" (it took him about 4-5 minutes).

I can still see the emails on my hard drive and need to import them back to the "Message Center" as soon as possible.

Many are Templates I use daily.

Please point me into the direction of someone with the old manuals for Netscape 7.2 or a really good technician who can help (I am perfectly willing to pay his or her).

I need help recovering (importing back) the e-mails in my message center in Netscape 7.2.

This can be done as it has happened before and the messages are still showing on my hard drive.

Nothing is said why the e-mails are not viewable in the Message Center, or whatever it is called, without having done something to the Netscape profile. There is a lot which can be done by referring to this series of Netscape Mail topics.

"I can still see the emails on my hard drive"
- What does this mean? The terminology is not definitive enough.
- What is the complete folders' path that leads to 'the emails'?
- Are 'the emails' separate files (one for each email); or are you referring to the email files (= NS mail folders): such as Inbox, Templates, Sent, etc.?

Did you have a Netscape crash, and subsequently been required to create a new profile?
What occurred prior to this problem situation?

Thank you PaulD,

- I can still see the emails on my hard drive"
Under Netscape (on my Hard Drive) their is a folder called USERS. The following folders are the Topics normally shown on the Message Center.

- What does this mean? The terminology is not definitive enough. (SEE ABOVE)

- What is the complete folders' path that leads to 'the emails'?
The size of the "folder" indicates the contents. You can open individual e-mails using Notepad - but there are hundreds and hundreds of pictures in these folders.

- Are 'the emails' separate files (one for each email); or are you referring to the email files (= NS mail folders): such as Inbox, Templates, Sent, etc.? (SEE ABOVE)

Did you have a Netscape crash, and subsequently been required to create a new profile?
What occurred prior to this problem situation?
There was no crash - I simply was trying to set up for Newsgroups and could not get it to work and deleted my attempt and accidently removed the entire contents of the Message Center (I had this happen once before and the NETSCAPE SUPPORT line inported the contents with about six moves.

I will be delighted to make a HEALTHY donation for assistance in finding someone to "walk" me through the "import."

THANK YOU - I AM JUST TRYING TO FIND SOMEONE WITH AN OLD MANUAL OR THE KNOWLEDGE TO IMPORT THE ITEMS BACK.

Your first post mentioned Netscape 7.2.
But the path inferred in your reply is correct for Netscape 4.7x.

1. Which Netscape are you using?
2. What is the complete folders' path that leads to the emails?
--- Hint: start with "C:\", and go from there.

- For 4.7x it may be similar to C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\opdvd\Mail
-- There is a pair of files for each mail folder: the second one has a file extention of .snm.

- For 7.2: C:\Documents and Settings\opdvd\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\isp_mail_server_name. (Note that this is all one long string.)
-- There is a pair of files for each mail folder: the second one has a file extention of .msf.

3. Is Netscape 'working', although the old mail is missing?
4. "I ... accidently removed the entire contents of the Message Center ..."
-- Do you recall if you had to 'start over' again - Create Profile - after the mishap?
5. If you have more than one path, please list all.

I, also, would like to have more information, and, I am puzzled by the statement that:
You can open individual e-mails using Notepad - but there are hundreds and hundreds of pictures in these folders.

Be it a Netscape4.x, or 7.x, the mail is a file called: Inbox, and all messages are found there, back to backup. I could never open individual message. As for no-text formats, like pictures, a program like Notepad (or Wordpad, for larger files) will not cut it.

Will not cut it

Postby OPDVD » Tue 07 Jul, 2009 11:54 am

Thank you.

I am aware that the pictures cannot be viewed until everything is "imported" back to the Message Center.

The only reason I opened some of the files using Notepad was to make sure they were still there.

That's, exactly, what I do. But, you were "helpless", and now "happier". Are you getting anywhere with your original issue?

You should abandon the obsolete Netscape7.2, and move on to Seamonkey, if you want to have a similar look to the old Netscape7.x, or try the Firefox/Thunderbird combination. Firefox is browser only, as you must have noticed (I see that you are using a very ancient version), while Thunderbird is mail only. You should be able to import settings from Netscape Mail as you install Thunderbird. But, if things are not in order, using Netscape Mail, now, I would wait.
