"X" problem for FF3.5 solved

Postby richard mitnick » Sat 11 Jul, 2009 5:42 pm

If you miss the "X" on a single tab in FF3.5, here is a solution I got from a guest at Mozillazine:

" Post Posted 11 Jul 2009 01:47 pm
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4227
after installing, Customize the toolbar, by dragging the icon , Close All Tabs up into the toolbar & dropping thereon"

Missing, altogether? I will be more precise. My tabs do not show an obvious X. It appears to be grayed out, but that's a characteristic of the Chromifox's theme, but placing the mouse on the barely visble X, turns it a very visible red. In addition one can right click on the targeted tab|Close Tab. To make things more interesting, the Chromifox Theme places the Tabs on top of the toolbar, like Google Chrome (thus the name Chromifox).

Fulvio-

I cannot comment on Chromifox.

I am using either the default theme or Simple Green. In both cases, if I have just a single tab open, there is no "X" to close it out. I do not get the "X" in the tab until I open a new tab.

So, this extension, given to me by an unnamed guest at Mozillazine, allows me to place the "X" on my Tool Bar. I don't care where it is, as long as I have it. I mean, you know, I still need to mouse my way up to the "X" somewhere, so the Tool Bar is just as good as the tab itself. If you watch real quickly, this extension is just doing the job a creating a new tab for me, but really really fast.

BTW, I heard it was 112deg F in Phoenix yesterday. What's it like where you are? Feet in a bucket of ice water?

Omaha is a long way from Phoenix. It has been muggy, often overcast, and, yesterday highs of 78. Today it may get a bit warmer if the sun comes out. Far from ice-in-the-water weather.
We need some rain, though. Some critters are getting so desperate that they go after tomato plants.
As for your 3.5 issue, can you right click and close the tab? That would be more of an issue, if another tab needs to be opened.

Fulvio-

Fortunately, I still have on machine on which I have not done the extension.

With just one tab, there is no "X" to close out the tab. If you right click on that tab, the options are New Tab, and Reload Tab, and Bookmark This Tab. Everything else, including Close Tab, is grayed out.

Once you load a new tab, both tabs will have the "X".

After installing the extension, and dragging the proper icon up to the Tool Bar, now I have an "X" someplace which will close out the single open tab. But, again, if you watch closely, what it is doing is very quickly opening the new tab for you and then closi8ng out the old tab.

Interesting. I suppose I never really took notice of it since it doesn't really seem to bother me... that is, having the single tab open without the "x". You could click on Options and Tabs and take the check mark out of "Always show the tab bar". Then when you want to open a tab, just hit ctr and "t" and a new tab will open. Some "other" options for you, Richard. As for me... I'll probably just stick with the single tab always open. My monitor is so large that it doesn't really matter to me that I've lost a smidgen of real estate.

All the best.

Richard,
I tried to reproduce your issue, even considering that I have a different theme.
I, always, start with at least two tabs, that being my Home group. I cut down to a single tab, and it looked normal, but if I unchecked the Always show the Tab Bar in the Options|Tabs there was no single tab to be seen. However, if I opened another tab, two tabs showed, both with the X. From what you describe, it does not appear that the situation is the same, because, if I understand correctly you see the single tab, but not the x, without the add-on.
I, still, fail to understand why you are operating the way I understand you do. In my case, if I click on the single tab X, I close the browser.
I may, eventually, start using the other theme, but for now, I still use both versions, although 3.5 is trying its darnest to elbow its way into the default install location, and take away default from 3.0.11. That is annoying!

I am now quite happy with the extension in place that gives me the "X" up on the Tool Bar. I can close out a single tab without closing the browser.

With the new "X" in place, what I see when I use it, if I look carefully, is that it very rapidly opens the second tab and then closes out the first tab.
