Slim PS3 to arrive 1st September 2009

Postby Mandrake » Tue 18 Aug, 2009 2:03 pm

New slim PS3 with lower consumption and more importantly, a lower price. $300 USD/$500 AUD.

That's $200 AUD lower than before, and it makes the PS3 a hell of a lot more competitive in terms of price when compared to the Xbox 360. The price reduction has taken effect immediately, so the current 80GB PS3 is available at the new reduced price.

The ugly "casket lid" design and the way too high price of the PS3 has put me off even considering buying one so far,
but this new Slim version looks like an improvement over its bigger brother. I don't think actual UK prices have been
announced yet, although it'll probably (or most likely) still be somewhat overpriced here in the UK.

If the PS3 Slim costs less than £200 to buy in the UK, I might think of getting one next year ... but not definitely.

For now at least, I'll stick with the XBox360. I've no intention of ditching that particular console.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Thanks Mandrake.

Would the new slim PS3 be a slight less powerful version?

I bought my PS3 mainly for Blu-ray playing back purpose last year. Still, I don't play that many games on it. (Wii games are more fun in my opinion.)

What's interesting is that they're decided to remove the "Install other OS" option that is usually used to run software like Linux on the PS3. Given the space power savings, I'm somewhat surprised, as the PS3 is actually a very popular option for low-power, low-physical-space Beowulf clusters.

Sony did the same thing with the slim PS2; the PS2Linux kit was only compatible with the old design.

And how many gamers would install Linux? I also doubt many of those use PS3 mainly as multimedia system would run Linux as the main OS.

The Linux PS2 kit only worked on the original style PS2 because it involved the installation of a 3.5" hard disk. Since the slim PS3 still has a hard disk I doubt there's anything to physically stop people from installing Linux on a PS3 if Sony allowed it.

At the same time I can't see why anyone would buy a top of the line console like the PS3, which is an absolutely fantastic multimedia device, to run Linux on it. Why not just throw it on a spare PC or in a virtual image?

The new slim PS3 has the new 45nm Cell processor, which lowers power consumption and heat. I also like the matte finish. My PS3 is like a fingerprint and dust magnet. It's also about fifty times quieter than my 360 and that has to count for something!

Excellent point.

I recommend using 3M Scotch-Brite High Performance Cleaning Cloth (microfibre cloth), very effective on picking up dusts from most surfaces.

(to Don: Sydney is very dusty...)
