Firefox and Seamonkey behavior

Postby Fulvio » Thu 03 Dec, 2009 1:25 pm

I noticed, more and more, a behavior from FF and SM, which leads me to use some tactics never used before to get anywhere.
I am using three different versions of FF, each with its unique profile, as well as Seamonkey2.0. Each one opens with one or two tabs, and they take long time to open. 30 sec to over one minute is not unusual, and I have broadband. Time of the day does not matter.
Typically, if I want to open a site in an existing tab, it does not work. It, usually, works if I reload the page. But, lately, I have resorted to opening in another Tab, and that works fine.
any comment?

All I can say is that I'm not experiencing these issues so that leads me to believe that the problem is not with the browser.

You are using XP correct?

You have 512MB of ram correct?

I've experienced the slow start up and operation of both programs on XP. I have 256MB of ram of my XP Box, and often time the program are just unresponsive.

As for the tab issue, I'm not sure about that.

John,
I have had 512MB and XP, since I bought my computer six yrs. ago. A ball of fire, back then, but not anymore. During that time, programs have become, more and more, resources' hogs, and all the alleged improvements have not helped someone with an old machine.
I learned to live with this, especially taking advantage of the fact that programs will load faster with additional tabs (the unused ones can be closed).
Iwas posting on this topic, mainly, because someone else, at another newsgroup, was having much more serious problems.
Thanks, John.

P.S: I was using Google Chrome, which, I thought, had fewer problems. Not so, when I posted, nothing happened for about one minute. Then, I reloaded the page, and my reply appeared, instantly.

Google Chrome is my default on my XP machine, as it loads faster.

Have you thought about upgrading your ram?

I had my machine under service contract, and it was half replaced after several problems. I, pretty much expected that Best Buy would declare it "dead", and give me something toward the purchase of a new machine. But, they spent over $800 on a machine which cost me about half as much. At this point, I take it day by day.

One further comment. I found out that links which would not open with FF or SM, would open, instantly using IETab. And, these are not Microsoft-centric sites. Examples is the WindowsBBS site, as well as the MozillaMessaging gripe site.
