Does anyone know what the difference is? I mean besides the cost.

Last time I used either was a few years ago, but from memory:

-Star Office is supported by Sun, with OpenOffice there is no official support.

-Star Office includes a database application while OpenOffice doesn't.

-Star Office included tons of clipart, templates, import filters, additional fonts etc. that weren't found in OpenOffice. It also contains a different spell checker. I have no idea whether the Star Office spell checker is better or worse than the one in OpenOffice.

You saw my post. In my experience, Open Office was impossibly slow. I had it on my netbook. I put Office XP on, the disc from a previous computer. Even on the netbook, it flies.

I don't recall if StarOffice had an e-mail program similar to MS Outlook, but OpenOffice does not have one.
