Windows 7 officially launched

Postby Antony » Wed 21 Oct, 2009 9:11 pm

Microsoft has officially launched Windows 7.

First copy of Windows 7 sold in Australia

Microsoft Windows 7 will be available in similar complicated editions as Windows Vista. Editions from Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions (except Starter which is only in 32-bit). In most countries, only Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate are available for retail sale.

And the price tags of Window 7, starting at US$199.99 for Home Premium, US$299.99 for Professional and US$319.99 for Ultimate.

Aside, many Apple bashers complain that Apple 'tax' users US$129 every year, which has been demonstrated a complete false. The most recent Mac OS X upgrade costs only US$29. Of course, some Microsoft devotees would even state that Mac OS X upgrade should only be something called 'Service Packs', whereas the upgrade to newer version of Windows is needed.

Microsoft is also over charging Australians.

Windows 7 Ultimate is $319.99 (USD) or $219.99 for the upgrade version which is about $345 (AUD) and $236 (AUD) respectively. The same Windows 7 Ultimate would cost $469 or $429 (AUD).

Which means, the same Windows 7 Ultimate (upgrade) would cost Australian almost $200 more.

A far cheaper way to buy Windows is with the OEM versions. Win7 Home Premium for $122 AUD, Win7 Professional for $177 AUD, Win7 Ultimate (who would bother?) for $255 AUD.

I plan on getting my copy in early December. For now the RC works very well and I'm in no rush to upgrade. :)

Indeed. The OEM versions are much less expensive than the retail boxed copies. I also plan on purchasing an OEM copy of Windows 7 sometime in the next few months.

I got a copy of Windows 7 Professional (to Antony: free) through MSDNAA back in September. The RC has been running pretty well, though, so I'm going to wait until winter break in December to make a full backup of my laptop, then do a clean install instead of an upgrade.

It's also worth noting that Windows Server 2008 R2, which is based upon Windows 7, was released today.

When you guys talk about buying an OEM copy, does that mean you are buying it w/o a new computer?

It's a copy of windows designed for people who build custom systems and sell them. It's a copy of windows that is locked to the first computer it's installed on.

Welcome. I'd buy one, but it's cheaper for me to buy retail, as I get three licenses, which I need because I am installing on three systems.

In reality, there are some retailers selling OEM version of Windows at a much cheaper price than the retail package. Some retailers will bundle with a piece of hardware (as the agreement required), some might just let go.

OEM version usually just come with a DVD and a printed booklet.

According to Apple Support Article HT3920, Apple will officially support Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) under Boot Camp later this year. Which will be a software update to Boot Camp.

However, some earlier models will not be supported for using Windows 7 with Boot Camp:
iMac (17-inch, Early 2006)
iMac (17-inch, Late 2006)
iMac (20-inch, Early 2006)
iMac (20-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2006)
Mac Pro (Mid 2006, Intel Xeon Dual-core 2.66GHz or 3GHz)

Although the 'official' support is not yet available, there are reports of users running Windows 7 successfully under Boot Camp on an Intel-based Mac!

Sounds like a good deal.

You can get a better deal if you are (or your faculty is) with Microsoft's MSDN and you can get legit copy of Windows 7 Professional for free.

Hey, Antony... my wife and I are getting a "better deal". Lin's son works for Microsoft and on Thanksgiving he's loading up three copies of Windows 7: her desktop, mine and her lap top... for free. Can't beat that. :)
