You say that this problem is not happening in any other programs?

Have you tried it with a different profile?

I have yet to see it pop up in Firefox, Opera or IE. I've created a new profile and so far it has not popped up there either.

I have looked at the link you provided for Comcast Live Chat but a required field is for a State. As I'm in the UK, I can't provide a State! So it seems that it's only available for US residents, therefore, I'm unable to do that.

I have visited Verisign's website, as they issued Comcast's certificate, and ran a check on it. This is the report I received:

[tt]webauth.comcast.net is successfully secured by an SSL certificate.
The following certificates are correctly installed:

Can one test Comcast without being a subscriber. As I said, abovee, I am not. But, from what I understand, the issue is with Seamonkey, only. This is not unusual, because I could not use Seamonkey for AOL music, long ago. Some site do not accept programs which have not received their stamp of approval. That includes Seamonkey, and the nightlies which I use.
For instance the Yahoo website would not work, at the first attempt, telling me to download a supported program, including Firefox2.0.x or higher. Right now I am using the 3.5.8 nightly, which is not supported by Yahoo.
Is the error message relevant? Is the certificate up to date for browsers other than Seamonkey? I am not seein a cut and dry answer.

"Is the certificate up to date for browsers other than Seamonkey?"

How would I check that out? All I know is I don't get the popup on other browsers.

Not sure where this is in Seamonkey, but, begin with Firefox, look in Tools|Options|Avanced|View Certificates tab| select certificate of interest (it should be a Comcast)View button. It will list everything you need to know.
By analogy, Seamonkey's path should be:Edit|Preferences|Privacy and Security|Certificates|Manage Certificates button, etc. Are the dates the same in Seamonkey and Firefox? If they are, it must be a case of dumb Comcast, and you are stuck with it.

If the certificate is out of date, it's out of for every browser!

How would I check that out? All I know is I don't get the popup on other browsers.

Probably because the certificate is being ignored or blocked by the other browsers.

I don't have a copy of it in SeaMonkey, probably because I didn't allow an exception for it.

Dave.

Yes, that is the correct path for SeaMonkey.

Yes. Simply trying to access their site (webauth.comcast.net) generates the error message, before they even know whether or not you're a subscriber!

Is the error message relevant? Is the certificate up to date for browsers other than Seamonkey? I am not seein a cut and dry answer.

It seems pretty cut and dried to me, the certificate is out of date, therefore Comcast should fix it.

Is the error message relevant? Yes, I believe it is, as it gives those users who are not as experienced in such matters (probably the majority!), a false impression that the site may not be who it claims to be or is unsafe in some way.

Dave.

I tried the address given, and I get
The operation timed out when attempting to contact webauth.comcast.net.
, in Seamonkey.
I think that Comcast is looking at the browser, first, and blocks it.

I don't think so. It fails in Internet Explorer 6 too, with the error: The page cannot be displayed!

Ping and Trace Route reach the site (both of which are completely independent of any browser), so it seems to be a problem with the site, rather than the browser.

so it seems to be a problem with the site, rather than the browser.

And how right you may be! I started paying very close attention to what goes on regarding this "Secure Connection Failed" box and it's appearance on the screen. This sounds so silly I hesitate to even write about it but it happens. I can't explain it maybe someone can. I've been working on this for over 15 to 20 hours off and on, closing and opening the browser and even rebooting the machine several times.

I have a folder in Bookmarks that contains links I use every day. I noticed when I opened that particular folder the warning box would appear immediately! I looked through the links in that folder and found this one .. SIGN IN - Comcast.net .... I don't remember where that link went originally (appears it might be for sign in Comcast web mail) but now it goes to the same site it did for DJGM.

https://webauth.comcast.net/auth/login? ... mcast.net/

I created a new folder called "Comcast" in Bookmarks and moved the link there. With the link gone from the original folder I can now open it all I want and the warning box does not pop up. However the instant I click on the folder named "Comcast" the warning box pops up. I don't even have to click the link only open the folder containing the link.

And guess what? That link is not listed in the Bookmarks in any of the other browsers! And I have yet to get that warning box in any of my other browsers.

Is that link evil or what?

RB2D2 wrote:I have a folder in Bookmarks that contains links I use every day. I noticed when I opened that particular folder the warning box would appear immediately!

When you say you "...opened that particuler folder...", do you mean by hovering the mouse pointer over it? You can't open a bookmarks folder (except in Bookmarks Manager) in the way you can, for example, an email folder!

Now that is very strange! I've never experienced anything like that when 'opening' a bookmarks folder. But see below! ;)

I looked through the links in that folder and found this one .. SIGN IN - Comcast.net .... I don't remember where that link went originally (appears it might be for sign in Comcast web mail) but now it goes to the same site it did for DJGM.

https://webauth.comcast.net/auth/login? ... mcast.net/

I created a 'Comcast' bookmarks folder and added https://webauth.comcast.net/auth/login? ... omcast.net to it. I found, when I 'opened' the folder, I also immediately got the "Expired certificate warning"!

However, when I added a second URL to the Comcast folder, it didn't automatically attempt to connect to https://webauth.comcast.net/auth/login? ... mcast.net/. That is a bit puzzling, because the folder in which you originally had the link to https://webauth.comcast.net/auth/login? ... mcast.net/ also had other URLs!?

I then deleted the Comcast folder, recreated it and again added the Comcast URL. Now, if I hover the mouse pointer over the Comcast folder it doesn't attempt to connect to Comcast!? Now I'm really puzzled? :?

Normally, when just a websites name is entered into the address bar, http:// or https://, as appropriate, is added automatically. The browser cannot know in advance whether or not the site is secure, so it can only add 'https://' if the site sends that info to the browser, when it attempts to connect to the site.

If I enter just, 'webauth.comcast.net', in IE6 I get "The page cannot be displayed", in SM 1.1.18 I get, "Network Timeout" and in SM 2.0.2 I get, "Failed to Connect"! IE6 and SM 1.1.18 add 'http://' (although it should add 'https://'!) but SM 2.0.2 doesn't add anything?!

However, if I add 'https://' to 'webauth.comcast.net' thus: https://webauth.comcast.net' I get the "Expired certificate warning"!

So, that explains why the results were different than when I previously tried it, because, on that occasion, I copied and pasted the URL from your post, whereas, when I typed it in on later tests, I didn't include 'https://'! ;)

As for SM 1.1.18 and IE6 adding 'http://' instead of 'https://', I wonder if it is related to the expired certificate? And SM 2.0.2 not adding either 'http://' or 'https://', I wonder if that is also related to the expired certificate, or a bug in SM 2.0.2?

I have some URLs in Bookmarks that were entered without 'http://' but if I right click on such a bookmark, select properties, then click OK, 'http://' gets added in both SM 1.1.18 and SM 2.0.2!? I can only assume that that is the normal behaviour.

I am still convinced that the 'Expired Certificate' is Comcast's problem, not the browsers'!

Regards,

Dave.
