Netscape 4.8 . . . why?

Postby DJGM » Fri 16 Aug, 2002 6:09 pm

This has to be said . . . what's the point? IMO, as Netscape 7.0
final is due to be released later this month, it's about time NS
finally put the antiquated and obsolete Communicator 4.x
browser series humanely out of it's misery.

Two points that I can think of actually:
  1. As Sillydog has links to every conceivable version of Netscape that has ever existed, it is good to point out that a new version might be in the offing.
  2. Granted this is just a personal point for me, but I still have to keep NS v4.x installed because my stupid credit card company's site will not yet work with any gecko based browser, and I refuse to use IE for it.

However, as I just tried with WS-Ftp, Mozilla, and DOS-mode FTP to access that directory and all showed an empty directory (well, ws-ftp showed a denied), it looks like it isn't QUITE ready for download just yet.

Well, the folders on the FTP server do have the files in them, but
the files are hidden from view. Anyway, anyone who wants to try
out the newest and latest Communicator update before Netscape
officially decide to announce its availability, here are the direct
download links for Windows, Macintosh and Linux.

For Windows:
Download Netscape Communicator 4.8 base installer.
Download Netscape Communicator 4.8 full installer.

For Mac OS (Classic not X)
Download Netscape Communicator 4.8 full installer.
(There is no base installer for Mac, as far as I'm aware.)

For Linux
Download Netscape Communicator 4.8 full installer.
Download Netscape Navigator 4.8 standalone version.

(To avoid spawning a new browser window on clicking any of the
links I've provided, right click, and select "Save Link Target As..."
from the pop-out context menu in Mozilla and Netscape 7.0 PR1.)

Did you guess the path and name from using previous versions directory structure and names as a guide? If so, kudos to your ingenuity  :!:

So it is not yet officially available, then I don't have to update the page now.

4.8

Postby jksteinhauer » Sat 17 Aug, 2002 6:27 pm

Well, I'm posting using 4.8 (ironic because the version I preferred for several years was 4.08) and yes, I do find it to be quite antiquated now that I've been enjoying 7.0 most of the summer. But even still, what a classic huh? It's becoming more rare to find a site, secure or otherwise, that 7.0 can't access, on those times I simply open up Opera with a more conventional ID string and voila'.
Keep rockin' on!
