My playStation 3 is running Folding@home when it is not recording TV shows. Overall, it's my poor man's TiVo.

Antony, a a $400 PS3 is not a poor man's tivo. That would be a $20 VCR and $5.00 VHS tapes.

Ricard-

Currently I'm running World Community Grip, Folding, Rosetta and SETI on my laptop. WCG on my PIII and Rosetta, SETI and Folding on my Pentium 4.

It is. And he conveys the point well.

I'm looking into building a new Core i3 or i5 machine for a desktop. That'd get some heavy crunching for me.

John-

I know it's money; but try for the i5 because of the hyper threading.

Actually Richard, the Core i3 I'm looking at has hyper threading:

Core i5 for desktops does not have HT, only the i7s do. Unlike the Core i5 mobile CPUs though, the i5 for desktops is a quad core CPU (not dual core with HT). If you want a cost effective machine for distributed computing (F@H etc) then the Phenom II six core 1055T CPU is probably the best option. Six cores at 2.8GHz for a rather amazing $199 USD.

Mandrake-

Come to think about it, paying $199 for the AMD 6 core, compared to $199 for the Intel dual core makes a hell of a lot more sense.

John-

A friend of mine who is a very experienced "cruncher' and very technically adept says that the results of the AMD 6 core in crunching stats show little more than a good Intel Core 2 Duo.

Be that as it is, Richard. When I am encoding H.264 HD video at a 1920x1080 resolution at 30FPS in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, I think 6 cores would be very, very helpful.

I just ordered a new laptop with an i7-840QM. It's 45 nm and 45 watt, but getting a quad for a laptop is a compromise. It will be on a chill pad, as are all my laptops. It will give me eight new threads of crunching.

If you get a chance, listen to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/citizenscience.shtml%20.

And, then, read my blog post, http://musicsprings.wordpress.com/2010/08/22/its-public-radio-and-its-music-to-my-ears/

Congrats Richard. I'm still on my laptop and my Pentium 4 desktop. January of 2011 my laptop turns two. They grow up so fast!
