Old address books and mail files

Postby chuck » Fri 14 Mar, 2003 4:31 pm

I just changed ISP and subsequently mail properties. Consequenly, I lost my old address books and mail folders.
What are the file extensions for mail, addresses and book marks in NetScape 4.9 and 6.2?

Is there a way to import them back into my new profile? :?

Hi Chuck, and Welcome to the Forum!

You can retrieve your Mail files and Address Book. Before you begin, backup your Users Folder in Communicator and your Profiles Folder in Netscape 6.2

Your Communicator 4.79 files are found in:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

Address Book = pab.na2 and all other files with an .na2 extension
Bookmarks = bookmark.htm

Mail files:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\Mail
Copy the files with NO SNM extensions to your new User Profile

Your Netscape 6.2 files are found in:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
(Depending on your OS)
Address Book = abook.mab and all files ending in *.mab
Bookmarks = bookmarks.html

Mail files:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\mailaccountname
(Or appropriate folder for your OS)
Copy all the files with NO MSF extensions from the OLD profile Mail Account folder to the NEW Mail Account folder:

Caution: they will replace any existing files in the new Mail folder. You may first want to rename the Communicator 4.x or Netscape 6.x Mail files, e.g., change Inbox to OldInbox, etc. The renamed files will appear in the Netscape 7.0 Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.

NOTE: in Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings, ensure that the "Local Directory" setting points to the correct folder.

If you have problems with the Address Books, in both Communicator and Netscape 6, you can Export the Address Books as LDIF files to your HD. Then Import them from within the appropriate browser. Let us know if you need help with this.

You really should give some thought to upgrading to Netscape 7.02. It is much more stable, and free of the bugs and security issues in 6.2.

And, I want to add to Ramona's pitch for 7.02, the fact that you have an import function, while 6.2 does not. But, still you will have to do it manually to make sure that no mail is overwritten.

:) Thank you for the information on the file loction and extensions.

Actually, I use NetScape 4.79 more than 6.2 as I like cetain parts of the layout better and there seem to be a couple of things you can do in 4.79 that you can't do in 6.2 (even though I can't exactly remember what they are so they're probably not that important). I've hesitated tring 7
because I was a early user of 6.0 and I'd rather not talk about that.

Perhaps this forum will set my mind at ease and I finally give up, however reluctantly, 4.79.
Thanks again.

Hang on 4.79, if nothing else for mail. And, I think that you should move on to 7, especially, because you have been with that unmentionable version.

Address books

Ah, now I remember one of the things I disliked about 6.2,
there is no EXport function for the address book. It seems that this is a page out of Bill Gates book.

Chuck, If I may put your mind to worry about anything wrong with Netscape 7.

Netscape 7 is infinantly faster and more stable than 6.2.3, and it is totally secure, unlike 6.2.3 . There are plenty of new features like popup blocking and tabbed browsing that make it worth while the update.

IMHO, Netscape 7 is what Netscape 6 should have been.

Also, Netscape 6.0 was based on Mozilla 0.6, 6.2.3 based off 0.9.4.1 - and Netscape 7 is based on Mozilla 1.02 - the first Netscape release totally based off post 1.0 Mozilla code, siginfying the vast improvments in Mozilla since 0.9.4.1 !
