I may very well ditch Windows now . . . I've still got to find out how to setup the internet connection, and some additional drivers .. but that's it.

I split my hard drive, and I am running win 98se/ Mandrake 9.0 linux ...
The Linux world is so different from Microsoft land... Anyway some pointers that I had to go thorugh,If you have problems with your dial up,and your modem is not found,then I would try an external modem ...I switch over to
a ActionTec modem...Works real good...Also you might have some problems with your printer and sound...Other than that ,I think linux is real cool. I have everything working now except my printer...But I will fix that later. Now the only other thing is trying to download stuff has been a real pain for me. I try to get rpm packages,they are alot easier to install....
I haven't figured out the .tar/.gz yet... well take care..

Another satisfied Linux user!
A friend advised that I keep Windows (which I did on the other system) in the event of connection problems, so I'd be able to give certian information to the cable company.
Aside from this, I've been running Linux 99% of the time for a month now, and, yes, I have had a couple of minor problems getting this or that to work (and print) right (I'm still a Linux newbie!). But in the end, everything was resolved.
Ghostman - Re the TAR.GZ file, it's along the lines of a ZIP file, but zipped twice.
gzip -d <filename>.tar.gz will extract the TAR file from the GZIP, and should place it in the same directory. When I run that, it extracts the TAR file, and the .GZ file is automatically removed.
If your Linux distro came with ARK and the Konqueror web browser, you can use Konqueror as a GUI-based file manager, migrate to the directory where the TAR fie is, right-click the TAR file and select ARK in the menu. From there, you can highlight which files inside the TAR file to extract (or all of them) and specify the directory where they should extract to. This is what I did in order to install Netscape.
When I first tried to install Opera, I downloaded the RPM file. Upon installation, it detected that some libraries it required were not installed, and the installation process aborted. SuSE came with more recent libraries (not what Opera was looking for), which was the reason for the installation aborting. But when I downloaded the TAR.GZ file for Opera, and installed as I have described above, it installed fine and works perfectly. Because of the library issue (which I believe will be remedied in a future release), I cannot currently view Java applets or other items that use plugins, but since they take time to load in anyway, without them, pages load in that much faster, so it really turned out to be positive that I don't have to be bothered by Java applets. The required libraries are available elsewhere for download (I believe the name was OpenMotif), but as they (the older ones) were not part of the SuSE distro, my personal preference was to not download them from a third-party source.
So, based on this experience, I find it easier to install software (Netscape and Opera - which is all I've installed outside of the Linux distro and SuSE updates), by downloading the TAR.GZ files instead of the RPM's.

That command referenced should be run in a console window (or shell), although I haven't actually tried using ARK to extract a TAR file from a GZ.
