6.2.3 migration

Postby cb12 » Sun 18 Aug, 2002 12:47 pm

I am trying to move my 350mb of messages from a win 98/6.2.3 Netscape to a win 2k/6.2.3 netscape. I have tried copying my files to the new profile which has the same name as the old profile yet the browser will not use the files. I had to change all of the .snm files to .msf by re-nameing.

Is there a file I am missing that tells netscape the pointers to the inbox messages? I can change the inbox and inbox.msf to the old data yet when I open netscape it shows the files in the new test inbox even though it was removed. When I try to click on them they all go blank.

Also, which file name is the address book?

In general, why do our friends at Netscape make this such a pain in the ass.? It is easier to export your data to IE than it is to migrate their own files. It seems as though they want to go out of business.

thanks for your help.

Address Book is addressbook.mab or something like that. Try creating a profile of the same name through Profile Manager leading to the path of the folder. It may work...if it does, please report, it's part of a tecnique I'm devising.

.MSF files are just the index files. You can delete those with no problem (and actually, that is probably the smart move). They will be rebuilt the next time you access the corresponding mail folders. The files you want which actually contain the email messages are the ones with NO extension at all. The .msf files are created by indexing them. For example, my primary earthlink email account:

<random.slt>\Mail\pop.earthlink.net\inbox
<random.slt>\Mail\pop.earthlink.net\inbox.msf
<random.slt>\Mail\pop.earthlink.net\drafts
<random.slt>\Mail\pop.earthlink.net\drafts.msf

etc, etc, etc. Just ignore the .msf files, grab the others.
