7.02 Macintosh mail trouble ... please help!

Postby frednow » Tue 01 Apr, 2003 10:46 pm

Just set up Netscape 7.02 Macintosh as my email client using SBC/Yahoo DSL as isp. I can receive mail but can't send it. When I try to send I get this message:

Sending of message failed. An error occurred sending mail: unable to connect to the SMTP server. The server may be down or may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your Mail/News account settings are correct and try again.

If I address it to my AOL address I also get a progress display that seems like it's sending the message but the "barbershop pole" just keeps spinning underneath the above error message. However, if I address it to myself at sbcglobal.net I just get the error message, no barbershop pole.

I tested same settings in Outlook Express and all is OK, both send and receive. Spent hours on the phone with SBC techs to verify settings are correct, even deleted Netscape account and recreated, still no dice. They say they don't support version 7 ... maybe because it doesn't work? Or am I the only one with this problem?

Don't want to use Outlook Express if possible; prefer mail and browser in one app. and am not a fan of Microsoft.

Can anyone please help me? I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
Frederick

Just shots in the dark here.

Check your proxy settings at Edit|Preferences|Advanced (click on + to expand)|Proxies. Most people without proxy servers should have "direct connection to the internet" checked.

My Computer Experts here at the University tell me to uncheck the "Enable TSL" box, but I think this is mainly due to our firewall setup. This setting is found at Edit|Preferences|Privacy & Security (click on + to expand)|SSL.

It is remotely possible that filtering software, firewall software or hardware, or anti-virus software may interfere will mail.

Finally, wait for better advice. :)

profman, thanks so much for your reply. Unfortunately, still no dice.

"direct connection to the internet" is already checked

tried un-checking "Enable TSL" box to no avail

I don't use anti-virus software, I'm on a Mac  virus free for 14 years.

I do use a router with firewall (D-Link 614+), but as I can send and receive just fine with Outlook Express using the same settings, I still suspect the problem lies with Netscape 7 and not the firewall.

Thanks for trying, though, I appreciate it.

Anyone else? Please ... I'm begging you!

Hi frednow

Welcome to SillyDog701 Forums

Check this preference setting from email screen....
Edit| Preferences| Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings| Account Name for this POP (generally at top).
This brings up your "Account Setting" screen.
Look down to bottom right of screen.. see "advanced" button, click on it.
Brings up dialog box... select..(may have to click down arrow) "smtp.your ISP name. net (or) com. Exampe, my ISP is Charter Cable. I have "smtp.charter.net" selected as my outgoing server. Hopefully this will get them emails out.

Oh ... my ... god ...

Dennis, you fixed it! It's weird, because my outgoing server was set correctly in the "outgoing server" window. But for some reason, in the little pop up window when you click "advanced" in that "outgoing server" window, had the correct server name as default but then a "blank" server name above it. I deleted the blank one so the only one there now at the top of the pull down list is the correct server name as default. Then, clicking "advanced" on the main/first "account settings" window, selected "always use default server" and ... bingo! I'm sending mail.

Thanks ever so much, I'm truly grateful.

Now if only some one could tell me how to get rid of that annoying Netscape splash screen (local, I assume, some resident file in the Netscape folder on my hard drive? but which file?) that pops up in the bottom pane of my inbox I'd be doubly grateful.

Hi frednow

Thank you for the kind words, glad them emails are moving.
For your next Netscape wish... I do not want to look at this "Splash screen" go here.... http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7cmdlines.html
provides a complete list of command lines or via your short cut.
Look at bottom of screen, you have two options to choose from (-nosplash or -quiet), both will provide the startup you prefer. The web page and information you will be using has been provided by Ramona... a thanks and a smiley will make her day.... like all the posters here, we work cheap, are just glad to help.

Thanks again, Dennis. I do appreciate the help.

However, I'm using Netscape 7.02 Mac version and those commands seem to be for Windows, am I right? Plus, what would I even do with them if I could? I'm kind of dense and need step by step help here.

Thanks,
Frederick

Ooopps... I misread your request, this is an easy one.
Close mail.... From a browser screen go to.....
Edit| Preferences| Mail and Newsgroup|... On this screen go to the bottom and see Mail Start Page.... remove "tick" at phrase "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in the message area". Clear out any URL address contained in the "location" field. Re-load mail, should be a clear bottom panel.

Dennis, my man, that was easy. Just had to uncheck that box; left the location field intact in case I ever get nostalgic for it. Thanks once again.

Now I'm just hoping someone/anyone can help with my numerous mail/address book questions in my other topic post.

With gratitude,
Frederick
