Ramona and Fulvio -- I'm Back . . . . . (unfortunately)

Postby Jim G » Thu 27 May, 2004 6:06 pm

Dear Ramona and Fulvio –

I’m back . . .

You did a great job helping back in January when my computer died and had a mess on my hands. Well, it died again, and I need help again, but I am not in quite the terrible shape I was back then. Still, I need some advice.

Basically, the computer is the same and I have everything backed-up. What I mean is that I have a complete copy of my profile backed up. I do not have a back up copy of my .ldif files, unfortunately. What I need from you is an overall plan to get up and running again. I have all my old notes, but I am rusty. Would you please review my strategy below and tell me if I am on the right path for re-creating everything? Thanks.

1. Install Netscape 7.1 from netscape71_sd701.exe

2. Question #1: can I possibly simply copy the profile from my back-up to the new location (c:\documents and settings\myname\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ back-up-salted-name.slt)? I presume I could keep the “defaultâ€

Hi Jim,

Sorry to hear that your PC died again, but evidently you have resurrected it and ready to move on.

Success!!

Ramona --

It worked fabulously! In fact, it worked easier than you suggested. I did not have to run the profile at all -- it recognized the new (old) profile from the outset. Everything came up without a hitch -- settings, email accounts, email, addresses, bookmarks . . . . everything. Thank you so much.

Hey, while we are at it, can you handle two more small problems?

1. Unsent Messages in Local Folder -- I have two email accounts and the local folder. When I create messages off line, they are stored not in the first active email account unsent message folder, but rather in the last (bottom) local folder unsent message folder. Any way to change this up to my first folder?

2. Send "Unsent Messages" -- I have my preferences set to 'ask me if want to send my unsent messages when going on line" but I am never asked if I want to do so. Any suggestions.

Lastly, how are you are Norton Ghost 2003? . . . . . just kidding . . .

Thank you again, Ramona, for your ever kind and patient help. I'd be in such a mess without your assistance.

All the best.

Hi Jim,

Good going on moving your Profile. It's so simple when you are moving the same Profile to the same OS.
jim wrote:I did not have to run the profile at all -- it recognized the new (old) profile from the outset.

Good, I've never had to either, but wanted to cover all the bases.

You can create an Unsent Folder in your default Mail Account. This is how:
Clear the Location Bar, then in the Location Bar field, type this: about:config

Scroll down to this script: mail.default_sendlater_uri
Right click the script, and select: Modify
Type this in the Modify field:
mailbox://<username>@<servername>/Unsent%20Messages

<username> and <servername> as they appear on "Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | <account> | Server settings

Now your unsent messages will go to this Folder, rather than the Unsent Folder in Local Folders.

When you work offline in Mail & Newsgroups, and then go online, you will have to click File | Send Unsent Messages, which will send all unsent messages. To send specific messages, you can open the Unsent Messages folder, then open any of the unsent messages, and send.

If you want to be prompted, then you will need to move on to Mozilla, which already has the Unsent Folder, and does prompt once you go online.

Ghost? I can tell you about Ghost Busters... ;)

Glad you are up and running, and don't be a stranger. We are fortunate to have you back!

Again, you are on the money . . .

Ramona --

Your instructions regarding the moving of my "unsent folder" were right on the money! It was a painless operation. Thanks so much.

But I do have an additional question: you state:

"If you want to be prompted, then you will need to move on to Mozilla, which already has the Unsent Folder, and does prompt once you go online."

But, under the preferences tab, under "Offline and Disk Space," there is the option "When going online: Ask me if I want to send my unsent messages." So I am confused about your statement. Regardless, I do have this option checked, but the program does not prompt me as indicated. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

To Ramona: where is this Unsent folder and, in which Mozilla.
I don't see such thing in Moz1.6 or 1.7, nor Thunderbird.
But, I learned that if anyone has AOL, it can be set up in Thunderbird, as well as Mozillas. SMTP using port 587. But, Webmail can't

Hi Fulvio,

Oops! O.K., so I lied!

EDIT:
The Unsent folder is in Mozilla 1.7 but doesn't save mail to that folder until you set it up.

Jim, as you can see I erred, and Mozilla does have the Unsent folder in the Default Mail Account, but doesn't save unsent message to the folder unless you have set it up. However, once you do set it up, it will prompt you to send the Mail. Netscape 7.1 will not prompt.

Apology for the confusion!

Not Working as I thought . . .

Postby Jim G » Wed 23 Jun, 2004 8:02 am

Ramona --

Our fix of the "unsent message" problem is not working. I thought it was, and it might have a couple of times initially, but it is not now.

I compose emails and then hit the "Send Mail Later" button; the mail goes into the new Unsent Message" folder, but when I try to "Send Unsent Mail", nothing happens. To get around this I edit the unsent mail as new and then send it.

I have double checked my script, will check it once more, but I am quite sure I followed your instructions correctly.

Any thoughts?

I have another question for you, too, but I will start a new thread for that one.

Hi Jim,

When you compose the messages to be sent later, are you doing this Offline? When you go back online, then click on "Send Unsent Messages" the messages should be sent immediately.

Your script should be similar to this, using "Prodigy" as an example:

mailbox://JimG@pop.prodigy.net/Unsent%20Messages

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Ramona --

The instructions you originally gave me included a second colon at the beginning of the line -- in other words, mailbox://: -- whereas the example you just gave had only the first colon immediately following "mailbox." Could that be the problem (I will change this and try again)? Also, I did not have the little arrow at the end of the line pointing to the upper right.

If this helps at all, I have two messages in the unsent box right now, but when I click on "File" button in the upper left corner, the "Send Unsent Messages" line is not available (highlighted). What does this tell us if anything?

Thank you.

The second colon was the problem. It is working now.

Thanks again.

By the way, the little arrow is something new, at this forum. Nice, but disconcerting the first time around.
