I currently have a 54X drive, and am not sure if there would be any noticable difference between 54X and 56X.

The rating of a drive is the highest (reading) speed the drive can achive (on the outer edge, I believe). I imagine that going from a highest speed of 54 to a highest speed of 56 has almost no effect on the average speed. Vibration may also be an issue and force the drive to slow down.
