A virus?

Postby Melissa » Tue 20 May, 2003 12:14 am

I'm not sure but I believe my computer has a virus or something. I'm hoping if someone could help me.

This is my problem. My computer is painfully slow and I can't seem to get into hotmail to check email or amazon to look at my account. It's somehow blocking these sites - I don't have cookies blocked either. I have scanned my harddrive for viruses. Can anyone help me? Any suggestions? I have also used Spybot and Adaware too.

Hello Melissa and welcome to Sillydog forums!

If you can connect to internet, visit http://www.pandasoftware.com
On main page you have in lower left corner Panda`s Active scan, which will clean up your machine on line.
If you have dial-up connection, it will took some time. If you experience further problems after clean up, post back.

Regards,

Gregor

Found some viruses but didn't work.

Postby Melissa » Tue 20 May, 2003 2:27 pm

Hi,

Thanks for the Panda Software link. It picked up the Klez virus that my Norton Utilities virus software hadn't picked up. I never open up email from someone I don't know and even if I do I am very careful.

The only thing is -- I still have the problem of being very, very slow and not being able to view sites that I would normaly be able to view. I am a graphic artist and work on my computer all the time. It suddenly did this in the last few days. I find it odd that I can't get to websites such as hotmail (past the 1st page) to retrieve email or look at accounts that I have set up on other sites. It all seems to be connected but I'm stumped. My cookies are enabled so it's not like I have blocked them. Could there be some kind of a coding that a hacker placed on the computer?

This thread is in the wrong forum, methinks. Can someone move
it either to the Microsoft Windows forum or General Area forum?

Try checking your firewall to see if these sites are being blocked for some reason. As a last resort, try shutting down your antivirus just to see if you can access those sites or if your browsing speeds up any.

Melissa,
DJGM is quite correct. This is more of a Windows question, and should be moved there.
But, since you are still around, I would say, that you could have not had a problem all along. Is it getting worse or just bad all the time. Since you use IE, and I don't, is there something similar to the Netscape Cache which can clog up your system? There is Cache or Temp.Internet File which have to be flushed or else the computer will come to a grinding halt. We had this problem four years ago, knowing very little, and never doing any housekeeping. Our computer just about stopped doing anything , using AOL, which is patterned after IE. Delete that stuff, and I would expect better performance. My apologies if I selected something too obvious.

The Firewall!!

Postby Melissa » Tue 20 May, 2003 10:20 pm

Oh Thank You!! It was the Firewall that was blocking the sites and slowing things down. I'm not sure why suddenly this has happened but I disabled Norton Utilities and the firewall.

I tried to go to those sites and I was able to see them. The computer is faster too. I wonder if a virus had did something to the firewall software.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. It's a great forum! :D

Melissa, Norton is a great Anti Virus program but a big pain as Firewall.
You will be better off with a free firewall like Zone Alarm, Sygate or Tiny.

Melissa: Glad you solved your problem. for an anti virus, try AVG (you can use it for free or purchase it (you get tech support if you purchase it) and try Sygate (Sygate is free). AVG does not use much in system resources and Sygate has been problem free for me. Make sure you completely uninstall your Norton programs before installing the ones mentioned above.

Yes, I think I will uninstall Norton Utilities and install one of the above suggested anti-virus software. I had something go wrong with my computer a few months back too and I believe Norton was the culprit that time too. I just didn't realize it this time because there were all kinds of things going wrong. This has been very useful for me. Even the Panda software scan picked up on a couple of viruses that were sitting on my computer that Norton hadn't picked up on.

Thanks again!

Topic moved to Microsoft Windows.

Norton Utilities is not anti-virus software.

Symantec's anti-virus software is Norton AntiVirus.

Melissa, you mentioned Firewall before, which , I think, is part of Norton Utilities. I am aware of any problem caused by Norton AntiVirus although the McAfee AV has been known to slow things down. But it is always a good idea to have something else, just in case.
