About Plug Ins

Postby Lorraine » Mon 26 May, 2003 9:39 pm

Hi:
The music on my bios page on my website doesn't work anymore. My website is also a mess. Needs to have W3C.

When I open my bios page, it says I need a plugin.
Then when I click for the plugin, there are two.
Apple Quicktime 5 Plugin
(I'm not fussy having Quicktime on my puter unless it works with RP and Winamp now)
The other one is: CineWeb by Digigani
I have never heard of this one, but will try it.

When & if I download Cineweb PlugIn, where will I install it?
Should it go in the Netscape|plugins folder, the one with Flashback, Viewpoint, npnull.dll and the Java etc.?

Will the Plugins show after installing in NSPlugin folder, in Help|About Plugins ?

Music doesn't play at all right now when surfing, Real Player is installed as well as Winamp 3. Both play when I click on it in Netscape but not automatically in webpages.
What should I do? <g>
TIA

Lorraine,
did this happen suddenly, or was Netscape 7 installed after the programs which run the music.
It works this way. Let's say that your music needs to be played by Quicktime. If you have never had Quicktime, you will install it where it wants. In exchange, the program will drop some .dll files which act as links to play with Quicktime, in the Plugins folder of Netscape.
You did not mention any music .dll, so I must assume that the music programs were present before the installation of Netscape, so you will to put something in the Plugins folder. From what you say, I am not sure if music was playing in your page when you had Netscape 4.xx.
I don't know about CineWeb. It does not appear to have a free version like Quicktime.
By the way, Quicktime will be at version 6.

Hi Fulvio:
Yes, my music has been on that page for about 4 years I guess. It always played when I had NS4.79
Of course I had LiveUpdate I think. Previously to that I had Crescendo.

It hasn't played since I got rid of NS4.79
It is in Yahoo Geocities.

There are so many things wrong with it now. My site used to look, not to bad, for an amateur with NS4.79. I started that page about 4 mos. after I had been on the Net.

When I go to my site, http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/7368 and click on Bios or on the Enter at the bottom of the page you will get the page I am talking about. It used to play the tune <grin> Unforgettable.

I have been trying to fix my first page, the background was supposed to be a purpleblk page and it doesn't work, so I tried with just a black page.
Still no luck. I guess my HTML is all messed up now, I was switching it around I guess. Looks like I will have to bif the site in the trash :(
I worked so hard doing it too.

It isn't any better in IE either.

I have the W3C validator site, I validated it but, it started and then
it says it can't validate my page, and then shows my HTML *sigh*

Anyway, music doesn't play in most of the posts when I go in Annexcafe in Netscape. In fact, I don't think I have heard any music on any websites since I have this browser.

I can play some of my midis or MP3's from my directory with Real Player.
I don't know what the matter is.

Anyone know of a newsgroup that can help me? I won't bother you guys then.
TIA

Try downloading and installing Crescendo 5.1 Basic (free). Just pick the basic player and choose Netscape and the correct Operating Sysytem when asked. It downloads a file that will run when you click on it. I believe that the installation is simple. The company's name is LiveUpdate.

It works well for me in Netscape 7.02 and Mozilla 1.4b. The music at your site plays fine.

Great, LiveUpdate and Crescendo are my favourite.
I still have C51n9x.exe in my download folder. 1,180 KB.
It isn't installed in NS7.02
Will look at LiveUpdate page though.
Hope it works.
I will fix it later as I don't have time this PM.

Glad that my song from the website plays on your puter.
It doesn't on mine.

I have to start working on that website, first page is really a mess and I don't know where to start will have to start searching.

Thanks a lot Profman

It should work. The music plays for me, also. And, as a rule of thumb, I do not let the site tell me what I need. I just copy the entire Plugins folder from 4.x. Or, you just copy the the .dll file which are lacking in 7. You do not even need to reinstall the Crescendo program. In my case, I do not have the Crescendo .dll in this program. I have beatnick, though.
I hope that I don't confuse you. There are many ways to do nasty things to the proverbial cat. Do things the way it works.

Thanks Fulvio, I had Beatnik at one time or another. When Netscape first started to use it a couple of years ago. It wasn't any good but it was alright a little later on.

Plugins have always confused me. I just never know which one to use.
Usually there are more than two and I know very little about them.

I will try Crescendo as when I made that page I was using Crescendo.
I guess I will put it in my plugins folder in Netscape. I only have the one version of Netscape, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Later with the results,
Thanks
