Thanks DJGM, that was a big help I've ordered another 256 MB of the internet. Soon I'll be able to get a copy of tiger and try that out :)

Yeah, a ram upgrade is fairly cheap but makes a world of difference in terms of performance.

Agree, I upgraded my PowerBook 12" from 768MB to 1.25GB RAM, it speeds up quite a bit.
The only problem... the 1GB RAM chip for laptop was not that cheap.

Good news! Instead of getting the 188Mhz computer I was going to get, I got a better one from someone else! Here are the specs:

Gateway 2000
Intel Pentium II@266Mhz
4GB HDD
64 MB Ram
Windows XP Pro

This computer had Windows 98 when I recieved it but I upgraded to XP. Windows 98 was definately a lot faster! Also I am upgrading the ram, and probebly putting in a bigger HDD.

Windows XP on a 266Mhz CPU with only 64MB RAM?!? That's going to be like running through very thick
treacle even if you switch the UI to "Windows Classic" mode. Boost the RAM to at least 512MB RAM,
and you might just find that Gateway2000 system useable with Windows XP.

Otherwise, you could boost it to about 256MB RAM, and replace Windows XP with 2000 . . . or Linux.

It's understandable that Windows XP would be slower on that PC. A Pentium at 266 MHz and 64 MB RAM is the minimum requirements listed by Microsoft for Windows XP. To run Windows XP smoothly, you'd need 128 MB RAM at a minimum, but the more RAM the better things will run.

Also, Windows 2000 could do well on that PC as it is currently, but again more RAM would help.

Realistically, I wouldn't install or run Windows XP on any system with less than 256MB RAM on it.

NO-O-O-O-O! Unless you're a glutton for punishment, steer clear of Windows Malignant Edition!

Well, geek theory proven last night. If you apply the correct know-how, you can run XP usably on a machine with only 64MB of RAM but a 500MHz processor, and on another with only a 233MHz processor and 160MB of RAM.

Well, I'd install Server 2003, which is inherently a bit faster, but it's locking me out due to incompatibilities with the first system, and it doesn't get along with the second one's PCMCIA and infrared controllers.

Next challenge -- Windows Malignant Edition on a 486/33 and 16MB of RAM (as I have already found out that 2000 just won't run on a 486 processor).
