Actually, I also have a Western Digital My Book (250 GB USB version). I don't use it often.

New PC today! Well, it's not so new, but it's considerably faster than the other trash boxes I've been using. Specs as follows:

2.4GHz Intel Celeron CPU
256MB of DDR-333 memory, expandable to 1GB
Intel Extreme i845 graphics
20GB hard drive, runs at 5400rpm, expandable to 60GB
15" LCD at 1024x768
24x CD-RW/DVD drive (the writer portion's broken)

It appears to have been made sometime in late 2003. I'm swapping this thing out with the Pentium II box, which will probably be retired to a file and print server.

Oh, and it only cost a whopping $0.00.

Laptop: HP Compaq nx6325 - Turion 64 X2 @ 2GHz, 2GB DDR2, 100GB HD, ATI Radeon X300, 15" LCD, Seven Pro
Handheld: Palm Treo 650 - Intel PXA270 @ 312MHz, 10MB RAM, 32MB flash, 2.7" LCD, Palm OS 5.4

I have 2 computers as of right now. I have a Dell dimension 2400 with default hardware except for the floppy that was removed. It currently run Windows 2000 Pro with SP2 and Windows XP Home with SP2. I also have a Dell Dimension XPSP110 that runs Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro Workstation and Windows Server 2003. Both are equipped with modems that are used for daily internet access and 2 CD-ROM Drives as well as external DVD drives with each displaying on 15" flat panel monitors.

Want to trade the LCD for a bulky old CRT I have sitting here? :P

That's actually not too bad of a computer. Upgrade the ram to at least 512MB and replace the hard disk with a 7200 RPM model and you'll have a decent PC for running XP. I wouldn't try running any games with a Celeron processor and Intel graphics though.

I should've mentioned it's a laptop, so you'd end up building a stand and buying a DFP-to-DVI cable.

Looks like I'll need to replace the drive anyway. It SMART's as Bad on bootup and routinely throws disk read errors into the Event Log.

Somewhat strangely, it takes desktop DIMMs, so upgrading it should be no problem. The i845 takes eight megs for video.

Ah. It's a laptop. A laptop screen isn't much use to me.

I bet you could find the ram cheaply on eBay. :) Same with a suitable hard drive. Perhaps a 5400 RPM drive would be better for a laptop, if the battery life is important to you.

It doesn't have a battery to begin with. The guy that I got the laptop from told me that the thing was long dead and just weighing it down, so he ditched it.

You could easily look for another battery, try this site http://www.pcsurplusonline.com/ I'm not guaranteeing that you will.

I wasn't going to bother; this thing will probably stay on my desk for the rest of its lifetime.

It seems to have the same pin arrangement as my old laptop's battery, so if I'm that desperate I could risk wiring that up to it and see if it works. I do know that they both take the same voltage, so the real question is which two are the positive and negative terminals and which four are data.

Yeah. Here's most of it (yes, it's running Linux :)):

The guts, note the desktop RAM and missing battery, and feel free to steal the XP Home key if you can read it:

And the side view, which is a bit messy around the edges:

Is it just me, or is that duct tape holding the display together? :D

Duct tape, yeah. Holding it together, no. The previous owner wanted to use the display as a graffiti board, so he duct taped it first in case he wanted to pull it off sometime. I can't manage to get a decent picture of it, so here's a transcript of everything that's written legibly on it:

Politicians: People that are paid with taxpayers' money to spend taxpayers' money.

Internet: Internet: A medium that politicians, religious nuts, and soccer moms have tried in vain to control. Whatever's posted here is free for the taking.

Politically correct: Something this computer and I are not.

(Remember VT logo)

MY GENERATIONS HAS THE LOWEST SAT SCORES.

Computer: Very expensive punching bag.

Will work for less than minumum wage!

I'll see if I can get a non-blurry shot of it sometime.
