Adobe Reader 6, anyone?

Postby Antony » Sun 15 Jun, 2003 11:45 pm

Hello all,

Has anyone tried new Adobe Reader 6 (free PDF Reader) from Adobe?

I personally have Adobe Acrobat 5 (full, v5.05) which works great on my computer, and in other word, I won't be able to use the free Reader (within the browser to read PDF files.

I read the Adobe forum and most people complained about the new version 6 (both Adobe Reader 6 and Adobe Acrobat 6) for being too slow.

If you have tried Adobe Reader 6, could you please share your store with us?

Please note: the software has renamed from Acrobat Reader to Adobe Reader, you can use it to read other Adobe files such as Photoshop files.

Yes, it's really slow to load, maybe 2 to 3 times compareed to Acrobat 5, although it added several interesing features, such as easy search panel, much prettier buttons, easier text selecting tool, and a powerful tool to creat PDF file from .DOC/IMG file and others(But will be very slow if your file is very big).
I started using it several days ago , and up to now, I see no critical need for you guys using Acrobat 5 to upgrade to 6.0 if you are not often creating PDF files.

Strange, on my measly Windows machine, it works FINE. Loading times are compareble with Acrobat Reader 5.x, and I've had no problems with the plugin in the Mozilla nightlies, or in IE.

When using it, I don't see any different between the new Adobe Reader 6 with the Acrobat Reader 5.1 on my PC.

I find it to load slowly indeed. But version 5 was also slow. But I can't say I need the upgrade. The new interface looks nice, but uses more space. On my laptop, where I switched back again, it uses to much space. And starts to slow as well.

About acrobat itself. No, can't say it's slower then version 5.

I don't like the acroread 6 installer very much... anyway, on to the program itself.

Nothing particularly interesting except for the following:
  • You may not be able to print PDF documents from Mozilla if you have Adobe Reader 6.0 installed. Workaround: Print PDF documents from Adobe Reader rather than Mozilla (Bug 207417)
  • "Accept license" dialog does not get focus when opening a PDF for the first time after installing Adobe Reader 6.0. This appears to be an issue with Adobe Reader 6.0, not Mozilla. Workaround: Minimize your browser, then click "Accept" (Bug 208442)

I haven't played around with the reader itself that much, because quite frankly, I don't care enough to do so (and 6.0 doesn't run on my OS of choice anyway).

I tried Reader 6.0. It's slow to load. After a couple of days I went back to 5.1.

Speed of Load

Postby Joeinazusa » Sat 09 Aug, 2003 9:24 am

This is only an observation.. When I loaded 6, the speed had slowed down. I disabled all Network cards (Firewire included), except the one that is connection to the internet/Router) and the speed was back to normal. I think it does something with the network and if you have more than one NIC/Fireware, it will slows it down.

Adobe Reader 6

Postby gradders » Wed 29 Oct, 2003 12:08 pm

I am using Adobe Reader 6 with my Samsung Laser 1750 printer, but I am unable to print, it always crashes.
No problems with HP Color Laser.
Anybody with similar problems.

I find 6 much slower to load, but no other problems.

No problem under windows 2000. No problem printing. Not any slower than version 5.

Adobe Acrobat Reader printing problem with Netscape

Postby pointlobos3 » Thu 20 May, 2004 10:11 pm

Acrobat Reader 5.1 worked fine on my computer (using Netscape 7.1). I installed the 6.0 version and then I couldn't print articles, only view them. I searched for a solution and saw a comment that if using Netscape 6 or higher with Acrobat Reader 6.0, one can only print from within the Acrobat Reader program. I'm not exactly sure what that means. Can someone explain, or tell me where to find a copy of 5.1??? Btw, 6.0 IS very slow-loading.

Make sure you selected the right printer from (within) Adobe Reader.
It might be easier to read PDF from an independent Adobe Reader instead of within the browser.

My XP came with 5.0, but I tried 6.0 ASAP. I had to do nothing special to make it work ok. And, if there is any slowness, I would not notice it at 2.8 GHz. Even NS7.1 is loading like a ball of fire without Quick Launch.
As for downloads, there does not seem to be any 5.1, but rather 5.05. Check http://www.adobe.com.hk/support/downloa ... rm=Windows

I had a very hard time convincing the website that I wanted it. It seems to match the download with the OS.
