A problem with Netscape 7.0 Mail . . .

Postby DJGM » Wed 23 Jul, 2003 5:02 pm

I've been asked to find a resolution to an issue with Netscape 7.0 Mail It involves the notification popup that
appears over the system tray when new e-mail is received. It says that the user has "0 new messages" but
when clicking on the "Get New Messages" button, about 3 or 4 new e-mail messages are downloaded.

Here's the problem, outlined by "Birdman" in a message he posted earlier tonight (about an
hour ago) at "DJGM's Technical Clinic" sub-forum over at The BIG Breakfast Message Board:

Birdman wrote:I have Netscape 7.0, whenever i go to receve mail with my netscape accound I get that
sound (the same sound as you get new mail in outlook express) and a message pops
up saying "jason-bird" has 0 new messages, however when i click on get messages i
get about 3 or 4 messages, is this a bug that needs fixing for it?.

Any suggestions, other than upgrading to Netscape 7.1?

Have him delete the MSF files, then try again. This is the good old stanby, and usually works.

Took me a considerable amount of time to get here...

If Netscape account is referring to Netscape WebMail accessed through Netscape 7.0 (not via the web site), then what the user is seeing, is correct, if the user already has 3 or 4 messages already in the inbox that have not been deleted/moved.

If there are no new messages in WebMail (when it works!), Netscape will correctly report 0 new messages, but when the account (in this case, IMAP folder) is chosen, anything already in there will be displayed.

I have a simular problem with NS 7.1. I have 2 profiles, cw01 and cw02.

I log onto NS using the "cw01" profile. When I enter the Mail function, the New Message popup displays the correct number of pending messages for the cw01 profile/ID. However, the pop up has an incorrect ID. The ID displayed is for cw02 profile.

Logging on with the "cw02" profile, the New Message popup displays the same ID. The ID associated with the cw02 profile. The number of new messages is correct for the cw02 profile

I checked all of the perference and account entries for cw01 and they are correct...

Any ideas on how to correct the ID in the popup?

Thanks
Charlie

I always said that the popup is worthless, and stand by it. If you have several accounts, and it will tell you only how many e-mails have been received by the very latest account.
It is not an useless thing, but it tell you how many messages have been received since you opened Netscape, and only while Netscape was opened.
There is some value to the popup/envelope. I did not notice a popup, but the envelope said that I had 1 message in one of the accounts. I opened mail, looked at the header, and then closed mail without opening the message, and the envelope was gone.
So, it has some purpose, but not much.

One idea is to create two new profiles and copy any saved mail, bookmarks, etc to the new profiles once you have the mail accounts set up and you know they work. Then just delete the old profiles.

Hi KD6VIZ,

Double check these settings in the Mail preferences for cw01 Profile:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

At the bottom of the page, ensure that the "Local directory path" points to the correct location of the cw01 Profile.

I verified that the directory path for cw01 profile is correct.

The only info in the popup or envelope that is incorrect is the ID . The number of messages is correct for either ID.
