7.1 won't open

Postby Fran » Thu 31 Jul, 2003 8:43 pm

Hi,
I run Windows 98SE, 184 Ram -

I just found this forum and am hoping someone can help me. I d/l Netscape 7.1 today - installed it and it worked for a while, then froze and locked my computer while reading my mail. When I re-booted neither Netscape Navigator, Mail, nor Composer would not open. The icons and progam folders are all there but nothing happens.

7.02 ran with no problems but of course it was overwritten when I installed 7.1

 Any help appreciated,

Fran

Hi Fran,

If you installed 7.1 into the same folder as 7.02, this may be part of your problem. It's not a good idea to install on top of an existing Netscape application.

I would suggest that you delete Netscape via Add/Remove
Then do a "Clean" Install, with a new Profile.

7.1 won't open

Postby Fran » Fri 01 Aug, 2003 9:53 am

hi Ramona;

I've done that and it still won't open. I uninstalled several times and was carefull to clean the registry of Netscape mentions but when I re-booted & re-installed it still won't open.

I've re-installed 7.02 and it's working fine so for the time being I'll stick to that.

So, did you create a new profile, as Ramona suggested? The profile is not removed with the uninstall, and you can uninstall till doomsday, and then reinstall, and if you use the same profile as before, you will have the same problems. There is no harm keeping both 7.02 and 7.1, installed in separate directories, but there can be trouble if you use the same profile. However, you want to keep the profile, or at least a backup, to get the old necessary files in a new profile.

7.1 won't open

Postby Fran » Fri 01 Aug, 2003 1:28 pm

I've tried renaming all the files in the Mozilla folder but it's the same thing - nothing. Now when I install it, it doesn't even give me an option to open it with any profile - new or old. It just stops installing as if it's all there. The last thing I see is that it's verifying the View (something or other) then the hourglass disappears and the mouse arrow appears. Then when i click on any icon, nada, nyet, zero, nothing happens.

Whatever went wrong happened when it froze yesterday after the first and only successful install and I had to reboot. everything else works fine.

Oh well, I'll stick to 7.02 and try in a month or so.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Fran, I don't think that anyone told you to rename any file. If you renamed the individual files, you really messed them up. At this point, I cannot tell you what to do, because it sounds like a mess.
All you need to get a new profile, is to get the Profile manager to come up. If it does not, I will tell you. I don't want to complicate things more than necessary. But, if PM comes up, click on Manage Profiles, and then Create Profiles. The name in the only row is: Default. Change that name to anything except what you have now. Netscape7.1 is good. Take note that below that line you have the path to the profile. It changes as you type.
And then you are done. That's a generic profile, but test it with your 7.1.
If you select that profile, and 7.1 does not work, I give up. But it should work.
Please, do not make your job more complicated than necessary. I have never had to mess with the registry.

7.1 won't open

Thanks for all the replies. I've given up as I can't even open up the Profile Manager. Will stick to 7.02 for a while and try again in a month or so.

You may need this information, sooner or later. One way is to click on netscp.exe of the program. The path is found in the Target line, after right clicking on the shortcut, and selecting Properties.
Typing <keyboard space>-p should bring up the the PM.
But there is no sense in you trying it, since you uninstalled 7.1.

7.1 won't open

Postby Fran » Sat 02 Aug, 2003 8:02 pm

Thanks for the hint. I reinstalled it and tried your suggestion but it says it is an invalid Target.

Is < >-p the correct command, with nothing else in the Target line?

Fran, no it is not right to have nothing else. You have to add the -p. This is the way that my shortcut works, although the -p is not needed, as the PM comes up anyhow. "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p
That is one default path for Mozilla. It would not help you to show what I have for NS7.1, because I install it in the directory of my choice.
My question, now, is: what do you have in the Target? Or, if things got messed up what do you see if you find the netscp.exe file, in its folder, and right click and send to Desktop?
