Netscape 7.1 mail accounts lost

Postby 2X95SEs » Fri 01 Aug, 2003 11:47 pm

:x I was moving email folders over to new accounts and removing the old ones as I went along. I had just finished moving the last of the messages to the new accounts when a DLL error popped up and the program suddenly crashed. I do not remember the DLL error. I reset the machine and discovered that 2 of my new accounts that I had just moved the messages in to and folders to were gone! Still have 3 other new ones working. Now I don't trust this program. Loads of important emails are missing. Anyone have this happen? Is there a way to restore? The profiles are not in the folders either. Just as if someone had manually erased the accounts. Please advise. Thank you.

I am not sure what you meant by saying you moved email to a new folder so I will tell you what I have recommended in the past. I am assuming that you installed NS 7.1 over the earlier version of NS you were using. Did you create a new profile in 7.1? If so, and you are using Windows 98, go to the location of the profile (Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Yourname\**********.slt) and find the old profile name you were using prior to installing 7.1. There will be a INBOX folder that should have all your saved email. Keep in mind that the INBOX folder you are looking for is NOT the one with the .msf extension. You can delete those. You should be able to copy and paste the inbox contents to your new profile inbox. If you installed 7.1 in its own directory, you can do the same thing and transfer the inbox contents to the new profile inbox. Installing 7.1 in its own directory is the better way to upgrade Netscape. Now, having said all of that, if you are saying that the inbox folders in your old and new PROFILES (located in the location given above) are gone, then you will have to wait for someone else to help you. Good luck.

I found the old folders last night but was too blitzed to start to fix them. The accounts were still labeled in the folder along with the associated folders; but they would not pull up. I recreated the 3 missing ones and closed NS mail. Went into Windows explorer (BTW, I have Win ME (yuck) on this machine) and copied the inbox, etc. to the recreated accounts and they reappeared in NS mail. Maybe I gave NS too much to do and it bombed? Been reading about the clean install, maybe it's what I need because it is on a NS6 platform. NS6 was not very nice to my PC...
I hate MS stuff so much I am willing to put up with the NS hiccups. All the PCs at my company are MS - "You can't get there from here" feeling everyday. Thank you for the reply.

Your situation may be under control. If you used a NS6.x program it is a must to create a new profile. I, also do not understand what you mean by move. But, no matter what you do never, ever MOVE or CUT, but always COPY. Many people urge to do back ups. Back ups are not needed if you do not Cut and then you make a mistake. Read Ramona's Netscape Solutions and you should be ok, if you have plenty of memory(RAM) and and you are careful. Anything from WinMe and down is risky with NS7.1 because it will eat up your resources and memory. The best thing is to install 7.1 in a directory separate from 7.02, and have different profiles. Coming from 6.x can be a problem by itself.
Please, take note if you have a crash, what did to what. It may not have anything to do with Netscape.
