"Internet Washer Update [Version 3.2] Update Message

Postby Topgrandma » Tue 05 Aug, 2003 9:53 pm

Have gotten a message which is entitled "Privacy Protection Update [Version 3.2 AC1] has the NEtscape logo in the left corner. It's a download. Is this legit? Should I download and use it or should I just ignore it?

How did it get to you? An e-mail. I would go to the website, and find out if they do anything like that. Is it the website?

These days there are a lot of messages in disguise. If there is an attachment called message.zip, delete that message. It contains a worm, which has caused no damage, but has the potential of causing it in the future, when the scroundrels will, surely, attach a dangerous payload. Just beware!

Update "Pop-up" Message

Postby Topgrandma » Tue 05 Aug, 2003 10:59 pm

Message popped up entitled: **Update** Privacy Protection ** Update** -
Netscape. I went to the Netscape site and couldn't find anything about it there.

Not the Netscape site. You were mentioning a program Internet Washer or something. The link I gave is for Windows & Internet Washer. It mentions a version 3.18.2, close to the one you listed.
Do you have an Internet Washer program?

Internet Washer

Postby Topgrandma » Tue 05 Aug, 2003 11:13 pm

No - I do NOT have an Internet Washer program. The only thing that aroused my curiousity was that it APPEARED to come from Netscape.

I would strongly advise you take Fulvio's advice if you haven't already done so, and delete that email from your machine. If you're not already using that product and registered with them there is no reason for you to be receiving that email in the first place - so ditch it! It's got a file you don't want on your machine.

This may be another ploy. There are viruses which come in disguised as Microsoft Security Updates, and it may look legitimate. Who would not use them?
Microsoft, repeatedly, said that they do not send such e-mail.
This Internet Washer thing may be a preview of things to come.

Hey, I've been getting that same message but for IE. It all of a sudden just pops up as if I've ask to install it. I really don't know how it came up or how to make it stop. Sorry, that my response is probably not helpful but I wanted to share this with someone whose having this problem.

I get a pop of such nature when I go to http://www.mail.com/

Privacy Protection Update [Version 3.2-AC1]

It has a DOS format with a blinking cursor right after

C:\System Soap\Update\>_

I have to ctrl+alt+delete and end task to get rid of it. My pop up blocker does not recognize it because when I put it on the list to be blocked the Explorer window for mail.com is shut off while the ad remains.

The second one I get there is the same color as the blue screen of death with "System Update" heading the message and again it contains "Soap".

I took screenshots of both. They are in a .doc file
