Ramona, don't sweat my Netscape problems. I should have asked specific questions before trying to install both browsers. My computer was so messed up with installations and uninstallations that I ran a recover/reformat and put it all back into pristine condition. Took a day but things sure do run better now.

I read the following article:Netscape 7.0 Shrivels Under Mozilla's Shadow found at Netscape 7 and I'm seriously considering "just" installing Mozilla 1.1 (which I burned on a CD before my recovery/reformat) and NOT putting Netscape 7.0 on once the CD arrives. I've no use for AIM nor the webmail so I can't for the life of me think of any reason why I would prefer Netscape over Mozilla. Can you? Thanks.

Hi James,

I just read the article that you referenced, and I sent the guy an email, in defense of Netscape 7.0. I am using 7.0 as my default browser, and on my system, it is more stable than Mozilla 1.1. Antony's Streamline Versions are about the same size download as Mozilla, and frankly, I don't see that Mozilla is quite as polished as Netscape 7.0. I'm not saying Mozilla is inferior, just that my preference is Netscape. MHO

I don't have AIM, as I opted out in the Custom install of Antony's Streamline Version, with Mail & Newsgroups. I don't use Netscape webmail either. Neither browser is perfect, but with a few more bugs fixed, Netscape is close.

Heh, you should see what Blake Ross and also Dave Hyatt have to say about that article. They're quite right, C|Net's Rex Baldazo and others like him from C|Net are not very credible. Mozilla is not an end-user product, and is in fact quite the opposite. If you don't intend to test and work on (or at least report) bugs, I wouldn't get Mozilla.

I look at Mozilla as "free as in kittens". No upfront cost, but an overhead after you get it (testing, reporting bugs, etc).

One is a fatter kitten than the other, so what?

Oyyyyyyyyyyy..............

Well, in light of my inexperience and non-technical expertise, I'll wait patiently for the Netscape CD then. Thanks.

James,
a CD will not be of much help, other than avoiding a download. If you download from the Sillydog site, you should be ok. I can remember if you had a 6.x. or any other Mozilla. If you don't, or din't, you should be ok. If you do, just create a new Profile, and we can guide you. But, by all means wait if unsure.

Fulvio... I love ya, Man. You're just dying for me to create a new profile... aren't ya! Well... when I did that recovery/reformat two days ago, my box was completely wiped clean. There are no traces of Mozilla or Netscape anywhere to be found. Hey... I ordered the CD so what do I do? Might as well wait for it and install it when it comes. I'm on a dial-up and downloads take forever.

btw: I want Real Player since I listen to my Orthodox programs with it. But I doubt I want or need winamp. I suppose the best thing to do is follow the guide Ramona gave with that one exception... Real Player. The CD should be arriving any day now. Hey.. one of these days I'll need to create a new profile... and when I do... I'll come knocking on your door! :P

Great. I am just sick and tired of hearing people spending hours downloading over and over, uninstalling and reinstalling, when a new profile is a quick and usually the only fix.

So,I have nothing to fear!

Real Player is Real One, and it will do its configuring. Initially, I was just working with the plugin copied from NS4.x, but I gave up. Real One has to add their junk to the desktop, too.

Fulvio

Are you certain that the Real Player that comes bundled with Netscape is "Real One" and not Real Player 8? I really don't want Real One if I can help it. Hmmmmmmm

Hi James,

According to Netscape:

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browser ... .jsp#comp1

What components are part of Netscape 7.0?

Netscape 7.0 includes Netscape Navigator (with Radio@Netscape), Netscape Mail, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Netscape Composer, and Netscape Address Book. Netscape 7.0 also offers cutting-edge add-on applications that help you get more from the Internet including: Java for running web applets, Nullsoft Winamp for audio playback, RealPlayer8 for streaming media, Macromedia Flash for high impact web content, Net2Phone for domestic and international calls to any telephone in the world and Print Plus from Hewlett Packard for easy access to printing supplies, services and features.
-----

I would still urge you to not opt for RealPlayer in your install. Instead, install it directly from the RealPlayer site. You can then configure the player as you wish. I would stick with RealPlayer 8, and not RealOne.

You can get RealPlayer 8 here:
RealPlayer Forum (link cut short to avoid wide table display, Antony.)

If you have MediaStorage, I would certainly keep a copy of this Version, as media player sites tend to get rid of their older Versions.

I understand your reluctance to download the full 32+ MB file from Netscape, but Antony's Streamline Version with Mail & News is only 13 MB. You don't have to be concerned with all the above components, if you don't want them. You can do a Custom install, and even opt out of AIM and WebMail.

I have a DUN connection which varies from 19,2000 to 42,666, and I never know what it will be from day to day. However a 13 MB download doesn't take very long, even on a slow day.

FWIW, and I promise not to nag again...

Downloading 13MB has been taking me nearly 2 hours of late, which I might just class as "very long"...
