How to install Linux under Virtual PC?

Postby Antony » Thu 11 Sep, 2003 11:52 pm

I tried installing Mandrake Linux 9.1 (x86) under VirtualPC 6 under Mac OS X 10.2.6, and I failed (three times).

The installation setup all went successfully, however, after installation, except the first time setup wizard, I can't boot up the Linux at all. The screen will stay at desktop wallpaper (no taskbar) and keep refreshing every few minutes. Nothing changes for few hours.

Are there any special settings I need to adjust when setting up a Linux environment under VirtualPC?

Or shall I install Yellow Dog Linux (based on RedHat) instead?
If installing Yellow Dog, I can't run Linux on top of OS X.

All sorts of help welcome.

PS, I know combining Mac OS and Linux into one section was a good idea... This is a good example.

This page explains how to install Red Hat 6.1 on a G4/450 running Virtual PC 3. It might be able to help you install Mandrake on yours.

I wouldn't try installing YellowDog Linux, as it is a full PPC compatible Linux distro that will
not start or run under any version of VirtualPC. Depending on your HDD, you would most
likely need to repartition it, causing your current Mac OS partitions to be lost.

Basically, when installing an x86 compatible Linux distro on VirtualPC, treat it as though
you were setting it up on an older PC (such as Pentium Pro) with a lower capacity HDD.

In my experience, it's best to try as many different, but compatible Linux distros as you
can get hold of. Try them, one by one, and stick with whichever works best for you.

There are reports from Australia broadband discussion board that Mandrake 9.1 (x86) on Virtual PC crashed all the time.

Mac OS and Linux (on Virtual PC)

Postby Sandbender » Sat 11 Oct, 2003 2:23 pm

I have been around 95% successfull in installing Red Hat Linux 9 on Virtual PC 5.

I'm running 10.2.7 on a Powerbook G3 400Mhz.

All went well, with CD's auto ejecting etc. until the very very last step when I was asked to identify my monitor, on three occasions both the auto configure or my choice resulted in what appeared to be a log in screen rendered in 20 x 20 pixels, not to pretty.

The screens during the loading process worked fine.

I plan to try again when I have a copy of VPC 6

Linux is a totally seperate OS to Mac OS X, they are based off different code bases and don't have a whole lot in common.

There's no relationship between Linux and Mac OS, but there could be some.

If you talk about Mac OS (now called "Classic") prior to Mac OS :X: 10, there's no relationship between Linux and Mac OS (up to 9.2.2).

Now, Mac OS :X: is based on the open source code Darwin which is a variation (flavour they call it) of UNIX based on BSD 4.4 Lite, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and the Mach microkernel. Darwin is vary similar to FreeBSD (many said,) but better. FreeBSD is a flavour of UNIX.

Linux is an operating system designed to run on PC (i.e. x86) and to have the same strength as UNIX. In other words, a clone of UNIX.

So, that is the relationship.

What I tried to do (as mentioned in earlier posts), I was trying to install Linux and FreeBSD under a PC emulation software so I can run them under my Mac.

For more information about Macintosh's operating systems, please read this thread.

I prefer VMware to MS Virtual PC, particularly because it runs on Linux, but I've installed SuSE 9, Redhat 9 and Xandros 2.0 under VMware with no difficulties. (Host OS is Windows XP Professional).

Had VMware run under Mac :mac:, I would have bought a license of it. (If the price is reasonable.)

BTW, I finally installed Linux on Virtual PC :).

I've been trying the network install, but it can't find VPC's NIC...
