History of today - 25th July 1261

25th July 1261
Michael VIII Palaeologus recovered the city of Constantinople (now called Istanbul) and was crowned Byzantine emperor there.

Constantinople, former capital of the Byzantine Empire and of the Ottoman Empire, since 1930 officially called Istanbul (for location and description, see Istanbul). It was founded (A.D. 330) at ancient Byzantium as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine I, after whom it was named. The largest and most splendid European city of the Middle Ages, Constantinople shared the glories and vicissitudes of the Byzantine Empire, which in the end was reduced to the city and its environs. Although besieged innumerable times by various peoples, it was taken only three times—in 1204 by the army of the Fourth Crusade, in 1261 by Michael VIII, and in 1453 by the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad II. Defended by Greek fire, it was also well fortified. An early inner wall was erected by Constantine I, and the enlarged Constantinople was surrounded by a triple wall of fortifications, begun (5th cent.) by Theodosius II. Built on seven hills, the city on the Bosporus presented the appearance of an impregnable fortress enclosing a sea of magnificent palaces and gilded domes and towers. In the 10th cent., it had a cosmopolitan population of about 1 million. The Church of Hagia Sophia, the sacred palace of the emperors (a city in itself); the huge hippodrome, center of the popular life; and the Golden Gate, the chief entrance into the city; were among the largest of the scores of churches, public edifices, and monuments that lined the broad arcaded avenues and squares. Constantinople had a great wealth of artistic and literary treasures before it was sacked in 1204 and 1453. Virtually depopulated when it fell to the Ottoman Turks, the city recovered rapidly. The Ottoman sultans, whose court was called the Sublime Porte, embellished Constantinople with many beautiful mosques, palaces, monuments, fountains, baths, aqueducts, and other public buildings. After World War I the city was occupied (1918–23) by the Allies. In 1922 the last Ottoman sultan was deposed and Ankara became (1923) the new capital of Turkey.

25th July 1999
Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France.

Armstrong won the prestigious Tour de France for five straight years, from 1999-2003, tying a record for consecutive victories set by Miguel Indurain (1991-95). Armstrong is perhaps even more famous for surviving cancer. Armstrong was a top amateur cyclist until after the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when he began a successful pro career. In 1996 Armstrong discovered that he had testicular cancer, which had spread to his brain and lungs. After surgery and heavy chemotherapy, Armstrong returned to cycling in 1997. Two years later he won his first Tour de France, as the lead rider of the U.S. Postal Service team, and then repeated the victory the next four years in a row.

27th July 1940 "What's up, Doc?" - Bugs Bunny debuted.

Bugs Bunny debuted in the Warner Brothers animated cartoon, ''A Wild Hare,'' directed by Tex Avery on this date in 1940.

Along with Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny was the most enduring American cartoon character of the 20th century. The acknowledged star of the Warner Brothers cartoon menagerie, Bugs was a cocky, wisecracking, good-hearted hare who battled Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and other slapstick nemeses in dozens of animated short films. Bugs's debut as a star was the 1940 short A Wild Hare, where he first uttered his trademark line, "What's up, Doc?" Credit for the Bugs Bunny character generally goes to Tex Avery, who developed a preliminary character created by fellow animator Ben "Bugs" Hardaway. (Many of the later Bugs Bunny cartoons were directed by Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones; the voice of Bugs was provided by Mel Blanc.) The shorts remain popular in TV reruns.

The 1958 cartoon Knighty Knight, Bugs won the Academy Award for animation... The Warner Brothers cartoons are collectively known as "Looney Tunes"... Bugs co-starred with Michael Jordan in the 1996 feature film Space Jam.

1 August, 1819, Herman Melville was born. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick.

Moby-Dick is the enormous white whale who torments Captain Ahab in the Herman Melville novel Moby-Dick (1851). Ahab is obsessed with finding and killing Moby-Dick, having lost a leg in a previous encounter with the whale, and Ahab's burning desire for revenge really is the center of the story. At novel's end, Ahab finds and attacks Moby-Dick, but the terrible whale takes Ahab, his ship Pequod, and nearly all its crew down to a watery grave with him. Melville based his tale, in part, on the sinking of the real-life whaleship Essex in 1820.

Yes, it's true: the first mate Starbuck[/i\ in Moby-Dick was the inspiration for the name of the Starbucks coffee chain... The musician [i]Moby is a descendant of Melville -- hence his wry nickname... Moby-Dick's first line is famously short: "Call me Ishmael." Ishmael is the book's narrator and the only survivor of the Pequod's encounter with Moby-Dick.

4th August 1944 Anne Frank and four other Jews who had been hiding together in an attic for two years were arrested by the Nazis.

Anne Frank was famous for her The Diary of Anne Frank. She is the best-known victim of Hitler's Jewish Holocaust during World War II. Frank and her family spent two years hiding from the Nazis in a small set of rooms in Amsterdam, protected by non-Jewish friends. The Franks were finally discovered in August of 1944 and sent to concentration camps; Anne died the next year in a typhus epidemic at the camp at Bergen-Belsen. Her diary was published in 1947 in the Netherlands under the title Het Achterhuis (in English The Annex). The diary was translated into more than 50 languages and sold millions of copies, and remained in print into the 21st century.

...

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

30th August, 30BC Cleopatra poisoned herself, she was afraid she would be taken prisoner by Roman emperor Octavian.

Cleopatra (actually Cleopatra VII) was the last of the Ptolemies, the Macedonian-descended pharaohs who ruled Egypt beginning in 304 B.C. Cleopatra has come down through history less for her administrative skills than for her beguiling ways, which she used in an attempt to keep Egypt free from Roman domination. Among those whom she charmed was Julius Caesar, with whom she had a son, Caesarion. After Caesar's death, Cleopatra joined forces with Caesar's colleague Marc Antony; they became lovers and political allies against Antony's rival Octavian. Octavian's forces finally defeated those of Antony and Cleopatra in the naval battle of Actium in 31 B.C. The two lovers fled to Alexandria and, faced with defeat by Octavian, committed suicide. Antony killed himself on hearing a false report that she was dead. Legend has it that Cleopatra died by the self-inflicted bite of a poisonous snake called an asp, though no firm evidence exists to support that claim.

Aug 31 1997 Princess Diana dies

Postby Antony » Tue 31 Aug, 2004 7:31 am

31st August 1997 Princess Diana died when her car crashed in Paris.

Lady Diana married Prince Charles when she was 20 on 29 July 1981. Diana's youth and beauty made her a favourite of the public and the paparazzi, and her personal life was frequent fodder for tabloids. She and Charles had two sons, William (b. 1982) and Harry (b. 1984), but the marriage was troubled almost from the start. Diana and Charles were divorced in 1996 and Diana devoted her life to her two sons and to worldwide charities. She and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, were killed in 1997 in a high-speed car crash in Paris, France.

Diana, Princess of Wales.
The title "Princess" was kept after device, however "HRH" (Her Royal Highness) was dropped from her title.
