7.1 installation

Postby Traveler0882 » Sat 27 Sep, 2003 2:00 pm

Earlier today I installed Netscape 7.1 only to be able to look at a web site that recommended using it - I wanted to compare it with several other browsers that I have. Naively, apparently, I assumed that it would simply be another program alongside N4.7 and N6.1, which were already on my machine. I have used Mail in 6.1 as my primary email program. But after installing 7.1, I realized that 6.1 won't open and netscp6.exe is gone. It was overwritten or uninstalled during the 7.1 installation? I made no provision for saving bookmarks or email from 6.1, since I didn't realize this would happen. Is there any way to recover these files and links from 6.1? Is uninstalling 7.1 and reinstalling 6.1 an option?

Any help will be appreciated. My abilities in solving problems like this are often limited. :(

Thanks.

I thought that Netscape 7 should have picked up all the profile information (like bookmarks and E-mail) from Netscape 6. Be sure to check to see if the information migrated over. If not, then come back here with any details that might assist someone else helping you out.

Its been a long time since I worked with Netscape 6, so I am real rusty on these issues. In the long run, you will be better off with any version of Netscape 7.xx since Netscape 6.xx had some significant problems.

The profile is not removed when anything is done to the program, as it is in an entirely different folder. I suggest that you bookmark this link: http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/index6.html#7profile You will find all the info about profiles. I have no idea what happened when you installed NS7.1. I remember that 7.0 had been extremely untidy, and it installed in Program Files|Netscape, in the middle of NS4.x. program and users file.
Netscape6.1 used to be in "Netscape6" folder, which may still be there, in that chaos.
I had heard that the settings should be picked up, but I created a profile for NS7.0 to avoid any conflict. I was under the impression that NS6 had to be uninstalled first, and then its plugins would be picked by NS7.x.
See if you have a Netscape6 in the Add/Remove of the control panel. If it is there look for it in Netscape folder. Tell us what you see.
You may have to create a new profile, just to be safe. It may take a while, but your settings are ok.

Are you trying to open them both at the same time? Why do you want to use Netscape 6.1 instead of Netscape 7.1?

His first sentence says what he wanted 7.1 for, and the way I explained would have given him the chance to test with both 6.1 and 7.1, and, then discard 6.1.
