Acrobat Pluggin

Postby Thaveewat » Mon 13 Oct, 2003 3:22 pm

Hello,

I have some problems with the PDF and Excel attachments. Some users send mails to me with PDF files attached, and I am able to open the files upon reading mails.

The problem is that some excel attachments are mis-handled by the PDF pluggin. Excel files are opened by the Acrobat reader.

I checked and found out that Netscape perceived that the excel files are Octectstream/PDF files, so I make change at helper application, by removing the octectstream/PDF out.

Later on, when mails arrive with the PDF and excel attachements, netscape prompts to save or open the attachments. This is annoying. Sometimes it does ask, but sometimes it does not.

Is this because the different PDF file versions sent by the senders? How can I solve this problem? What is Octectstream/PDF? Why did netscape (or acrobat) mishandle the file type opening.

Thanks for helping.

Best regards,

Thavee

This is not a good method, but should work.

Instead of working on the Helper application configuration, you can try to re-install Acrobat. (Make sure you quit Netscape completely.)

You may have mistakenly set up Acrobat Reader as a helper application to handle EXCEL files. I'm guessing you meant the Acrobat reader application was being opened. Plugins are launched inside the browser window. Helper applications open separate program windows.

If you are seeing "Octectstream/PDF" "application/octet-stream" or something similar, in Edit\Preferences\Navigator\Helper Applications, select it, then click the REMOVE button. In fact, you do not need ANY entries listed in Helper Applcations at all, unless you want to set one up yourself to open a specific type file with something OTHER than the application already associated in Windows FileTypes.

There have been many posts here on problems with incorrect helper applications. The solution is to remove the helper application in Netscape's preferences.

One possibility, the SENDER of the Excel file attachment's e-mail program is including the wrong mimetype. If you get a Netscape "Unknown Filetype" dialog, save the file and open it using Windows Explorer. If you use the "browse" button to open the file you could be setting up the wrong helper applicaiton.
