Problem with USB mass storage device in windows 2000.

Postby carmeafi » Fri 10 Oct, 2003 4:57 am

I have smart media card reader and other USB mass storage devices.
Initially, windows 2000 recognized them properly. Probably because of a surprise removal (withouth disactivating the device), the system does not allow the mounting of the removable unit.
I know that this is a problem that Microsoft attributes to the various hardware productors, but I wonder if there is any possibility of restoring the plug and play capabilities without having to reinstall the whole system.
Thanks
Carlo

Did you use the safely remove hardware icon in the taskbar? I have found that using that prevents problems.

USB Mass storage

Replying to Josh, I probably made a mistake and did not remove the driver safely from the taskbar. However, my prsent problem is what to do now? How can I restore the USB storage device plug-in capability in windows without having to reinstall the whole operating system. I could not find any proper solution to the problem.
Ragards,

If you can't remove (uninstall) the device via "start>settings>control panel>system>hardware>device manager," you will have to go into the registry to remove the entry.

USB Mass storage

I already went into the registry and tried to remove the driver of the device, but I was not allowed to to that. Always I got an error message. I did that also in the safe mode wit the same result.

Copy and paste the registry keys you tried to change. Some keys cannot be changed via regedit. Sometimes you first have to use regedt32 [note the spelling is not "regedit32"] to change the permissions on the key, then go to regedit to delete or change the entry.
