In an interview with The Australian at the Microsoft Office System launch in New York, Mr Gates said any such moves by government were wrongheaded and would result in a reduction in public sector productivity.

Mr Gates claimed the open source system was "inferior" and said it represented a false economy in relation to lost opportunities to improve productivity.

And he said Microsoft is pushing the cost of IT.

Operating Systems and Office suites are argueable, but could Mr Gates say thing about web browsers and email clients?

I believe it HAS occured to him. It's just that him and Steve Ballmer like to spread as
much FUD as possible, against anything that poses a threat to Microsoft dominance.

I believe open-source (i.e. Linux) is far superior to closed-source (i.e. Windows).

Bugs get fixed reasonably fast with open-source, and one doesn't have to patch the closed-source "operating system component that thinks it's a web browser" every 15 minutes, when a new flaw is discovered.

For what it's worth, I think Bill Gates is right.
I don't think Open source has helped Netscape very much, then of course neither did closed source.
It seems they just let him runaway with MSIE.

You have to be a visionary like Mr. Gates, to
make a programme work with all the virii that are
on the NET these days. So there are bugs, but there are bugs in all the other programmes too.

Even though I prefer Netscape, [perhaps because I started out with NS 2.0] I must say, I still think that Gates was years ahead of everyone with his
WINDOWS 95.

Actually, Xerox PARC (now the independent Palo Alto Research Center) was ahead of Gates. Windows was NOT the first graphical-user interface (or GUI). Xerox developed the first GUI..

Yes, O.K. but it took Billy boy to make it into the
Super Highway, or WWW.netscape.com
Everyone else seems to have had their heads in the sand and still do.
I used to programme Friden Tape Talk machines for Integrated Data Processing, in the early sixties.

I know that Xerox was ahead in microfilm, but after '64 and until '96, I didn't bother with computers.
I believe the GUI was first developed for NASA.
Perhaps Bill should get back on the puter and fix Windows himself.
