*Gulp* Novell tries to buy out SuSE!

Postby Mandrake » Mon 27 Oct, 2003 8:44 pm

Apparently networking giant Novell is trying to buy out the popular German Linux compnay SuSe, a bit scary considering Novell only recently purchased Linux company Ximian! There is an article at Linux World regarding this.

All I can say to that is, "Oi . . . Novell . . . NO!"

Worried about the AOL acquires Netscape thing repeat?
Let's not forget Netscape was worth $4.2billion in 1998 few months after it released its source code to Mozilla.org.
SuSE, $120 million.

Novell NO???

Why not?

Also, since Linux is open-source, I can't see why Novell could not release a Linux of their own.

And what about Mandrakesoft?

And where's the Tux emoticon???

No, AOL didn't want web browsers or web servers, so they sold most of that to Sun Microsystems - but Novell's future IS Linux, alongside it's exsisting products such as Netware (Which is still one of my favourite Operating Systems!).

I've nothing against Novell releasing their own Linux distro. More power to them if they do.

Personally, I'd rather see SuSE remain an independent company for at least the forseeable
future. AFAIK, SuSE aren't going through any financial (or other) problems at the moment,
so as far as I can see, there's no real need for them to be acquired by a bigger company.

As for the AOL/Netscape thing . . . Netscape Communications Corporation may well have
been worth over $4billion around the time it became part of America Online. As it stands
right now, I'd bet that SuSE Linux is probably worth a fair bit more as an independent
company than Netscape is as a subsidiary of AOL. Essentially, Netscape is little more
than a shadow of it's former self nowadays, especially since mid-July, when the
web browser development part of it was effectively discontinued.

Mind you, the overall financial value of Netscape could well increase when AOL relaunch
the Netscape brand as the name of their proposed discounted internet access service.

Just had a thought... mozilla.org is offering a CD package (subscription?) that will include all Mozilla distributions for the next 12 months.

Given this timeframe, would it seem possible that the browser suite as we know it, would conceivably continue at least for the next year, which should take it beyond 1.6?

(Netscape should also continue some type of browser development, IMHO.)

When did I make that promise?
I did not say there wouldn't be an emoticon for Linux either. :P

Since this is a Linux forum, there certainly should be a Linux icon.
