Heh... I thought it was kind of ironic that Mandrake wasn't using Mandrake Linux... anyway... have you ever considered the new Fedora Core? You can basically think of it as Red Hat 10 (Severn) only it's now being community-supported. It uses the current 2.4.22 kernel (eons ahead of the 2.4.20 used by Red Hat 9) and has much better support for hardware (although I personally won't be able to get DRI working until the next major release of XFree86)

It can be obtained at fedora.redhat.com (if you haven't already come to another decision)

Happy hacking.

From memory, Windows is a 32-bit hack on a 16-bit GUI, written for an 8-bit OS that originally ran on a PC with a 4-bit system bus, made by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

Windows: Stop complaining about it; stop using it.

Heh... the problem is, I don't believe I can get the Fedora release candidates on CD, and I'm sure as hell not downloading them all on 56k dialup!

I still think acquiring the assets of a company, then not supporting hardware that is less than a year old at the time of the acqusition (Voodoo 4 and 5 models) is pretty poor. Aren't we lucky for Microsoft who have created drivers for the Voodoo 3, 4 and 5 for Windows 2000 and XP?

Besides, everyone knows ATi cards are tons faster than nVIDIA cards! :)

For UK£10 plus shipping, you can get the 3 Fedora CD's here, courtesy of CheepLinux.com!

Shipping costs are UK£2.99, but I'd imagine it be a fair bit more to ship them to Australia!

You can actually either preorder the fedora 1.0 or get the current fedora release in Australia through Everything Linux.

Have you considered using SuSE or mandrake?

Redhat for idealogical reasons doesnt like to include stuff thats not properly opensource (it tends to be very conservative).. Hence, it has stayed away from including basic stuff like mp3 support and ntfs support. This might be part of the reason that they havent bothered to make it convenient to install the accelerated ATI or nvidia drivers (which aren't GPL). I'm not sure if this situation will change significantly with Fedora, which is why you may be better off with SuSE/Mandrake who's primary focus is on delivering a good user experience.

Fedora core 1.0's release notes http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/ mention that fedora includes experimental 2D support for Radeon 9200 (AGP) 5964. They also include the following note:
NOTE: The new Radeon driver support has been included for people to test and to help identify possible instabilities requiring additional work in the future. Note also that there are even newer models of ATI hardware that are not supported at this time.

I've found ATi drivers specifically for SuSE Linux 9.0 and 8.2 available here . . .
