no problem, the distro that I would recommend would actually be vector linux.. http://www.vectorlinux.com/ it is still maintiained, aims for a good user experience and has support for your hardware.

about OS/2 Warp.. geesh cant believe it costs $270.. kinda makes me wish i'd kept an OS/2 warp CD that came on the cover of a magazine.. People still seem to be giving it good reviews on amazon though!

The three major Linux distributions (Red Hat, SuSE, and Mandrake) all require a CPU of at least Pentium-class. These will not work with a 486 or earlier CPU.

ok,I got the VectorLinux iso.
I burned it,made the boot and root disk with rawrite.
But all keymaps appear to be qwerty while I need azerty.
I tried every single one in there.
So I tought I'll just continiue the install and see what I can do from there.
But after the reboot I got all sorts of strange coloured blocks and letters and symbols slowly filling my screen, like a virus.
Is this normal??
I simply turned of the pc cos' it didn't stop.
Need help with qwerty issue and strange screen

A new distro may work, believe it or not (although not to a useable extent). I have, believe it or not, installed Windows 2000 Professional on a Pentium 100. The computer had 384mb of ram installed, and an ATi Radeon 7200 as the video card, it still ran like rubbish though!

My i486 has all 4 slots used to reach an incredible 40mb ram

I meant a new distro, out of the 'big three' (Redhat, Mandrake and SuSE/Novell).

The Motherboard is a great Soyo "Super Socket 7" motherboard, with SIMM and DIMM slots, as well as an AGP slot. A friend and I were putting the machine together, but we didn't realise the only Socket 7 processor we had was a Pentium 100. So anyway, in the AGP we threw in the Radeeon 7200, and in the DIMM slots - a 256mb and 128mb DIMM. My friend now has the machine at his house, and it's useful now - since he bought a 200Mhz Pentium Pro (Faster than a Pentium, closer to a Pentium 2) processor and put it in, then overclocked it a bit.

heh that's nice.
So the core speed of the graphics card is acyually faster than your main processor.
I geuss he can rum some rather nice 3d games on there that where never intended for that old hatch.
