Netscape 7.1 will not start, like a big pop-up stopper

Postby Ralph2 » Sun 16 Nov, 2003 10:36 am

Hello
Seems I have picked up something nasty from the web. I had both IE and NS7.01 running looking for animated GIF files. While doing this put up with the multitude of pop-ups. Closed both browsers.... and when I tried to restart NS7.01 just as soon as the page would access my home page it would shut down. Same with IE.. Any other programs that do not use a browser to connect (MailWasher) work just fine
Since then I have run a full virus checker (Norton 2003). Run AdAware with the latest profile and SpyBot. Nothing found. I have re installed Windows.. no improvement. From TweakUI I have run repair > temporary internet files..... and "perhaps" that fixed the IE browser as I can now use that.
I installed NS7.1, at first over top of the 7.01.. nothing, then I removed all the traces of that and re installed 7.01... several times. Still nothing.
The installation seems to go just fine... until the part where it is supposed to connect. Then, I suspect it is starting but getting immediatley blocked with the result that I see "nothing" happening. This has all the earmarks of a POP-UP stopper gone awry

HELP.... Can anyone shed some light on this problem. What I could (should) be looking for?
Thanks in advance
Ralph

Check, as a first step, Netscape Won't Start •• Nothing Happens!.

Thanks. Your advice is "sort" of what resolved this as well as being able to download the Full Package of NS7.1 found here . I removed "every" folder and any files that had "Netscape" in them. Then removed all the major items in the registry that involved Netscape. Then installed from the full download... And here it is working.
But.. I am still concerned as to the why this happened. Both browsers failed the same way at the same time.. something happened and I worry it is still there.
