7.1 mail client KEEPS ASKING for my password

Postby miyagawafan » Mon 17 Nov, 2003 2:35 pm

thought i'd give 7.1 a try on my desktop. it started out working fine, but then it started prompting me for my password whenever i tried accessing my mail. when i type my password, netscape does not recognize it, and continues to ask for the password. it's my isp mail,,,i have cable, time warner roadrunner, wME.

note: i also have an old NS4.5 and IE6 installed on my desktop. neither of them give me any problems. i also installed NS7.1 on my laptop, and everything, so far, is fine there as well. i matched all the settings in both the desktop and laptop to no avail.

Hi miyagawafan, and welcome to the Forum,

Have you allowed Password Manager to "remember" your password?

If so, then click on Tools | Password Manager | Managed Stored Passwords
Look for the Mail Password there, and delete it. Then restart Mail, and enabled the "remember" your password.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

thanks ramona....first off, let me say that it's so great that netscape has a forum. i don't know why it took so long to find it.

i will try all your suggestions. however, i will tell you that i deleted it with go-back, and was planning to install again,,,,,maybe 7.0 streamline.

btw,,,i never saw a "remember password" option in 7.1, and i'm sure i went through everything.

btw,,,while i have you here. is mozilla EXACTLY the same as NS? if not, is it better? i tried it out a few months ago and abandoned it because i couldn't get the mail client to work with my roadrunner. would i be able to use mozilla + only the NS mail client installed, or is it not worth the bother.

Your password window should have come up the first time you opened Netscape Mail. BTW, it is your Server requesting the password, and not Netscape. Could it be that your Server is doing some maintenance? I have had that error, but only when my Server was doing routine maintenance, or a server side problem. By chance does your password have an " @ " included? Why it is working on your laptop and not on the desktop remains a mystery, unless there is an error/typo in your Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.

Mozilla 1.5 is very stable, and in appearance you can't tell the difference. IMHO, yes it is better. It has newer features, i.e. Junk Mail Controls, which I could not live without! It now comes with Spellchecker, faster than Netscape, no AOL fluff to contend with, etc. I highly recommend 1.5. I wouldn't regress to 7.0, as it is buggy and now obsolete. Netscape doesn't have a stand alone Mail component.

Read the Mozilla Release Notes: Mozilla 1.5

Please post back if you have further questions.

It can get really interesting at times. In my case, I have set up two Netscape Webmail and two AOL accounts, which is possible only in Netscape7.x. The deal is thaere must be an IM account, and all four accounts are accessed with the IM password, not their own password.
With this exception, any account can be set up in Mozilla1.4.1 or 1.5, or Netscape7.1, equally well.
