For all Netscape users,

Save the Netscape Browser

To: America Online subsidiary of Time Warner

Dear manager of the AOL client division and related software-development positions at Time Warner's America Online subsidiary.

We are requesting that you please consider the opinions of the loyal Netscape browser users, knowledgeable people, most of which started using the Netscape browsers way before AOL "discovered" the Internet, before sealing the fate of future Netscape browser developments.

I've signed it. Sadly lthough, I doubt that AOL or Time Warner will pay much attention to it . . .

I signed it too, it would be good to see Netscape purchased by a company that would do something with the brand name.

About the Netscape petition... now on www.savenetscape.org

Postby fcassia » Mon 24 Nov, 2003 1:18 am

:P  :P

Believe it or not, I intended to do this petition on mid-july when I heard from Dan Veditz about the layoffs. Maybe it would have had a better effect if done by then, but I'm kinda messy and all my projects get finished about 6 months later than intended. :o)

This was no exception. Anyway, the realistic in me tells me it won't work. Yet the idealist in me tells me "everything is possible".

Certainly, the news that AOL is intending to do something with the Netscape brand name (even if it is releasing a broken IE-launcher with the Netscape logo (HORROR!), as suggested by the "Netscape Navigator" screenshot beta posted on snews://secnews.netscape.com, it actually means that they DO value the Netscape.com brand name and are interested in keeping the current hits from people who are now using netscape 7.x and have home.netscape.com as their "home page".

(Otherwise, would you see the netscape.com portal surviving in the long run with a population of 100% IE users? Who would set Netscape.com as the default page? Microsoft? Forget it...).

Hence, I thought "what the H#CK!" and posted the petition. (I know, I know, about 4 months late, but it's better than nothing). I'm an idealist and a fighter for the lost causes (still running IBM OS/2 in one of my boxes, along with Solaris x86, Linux and several other OSs ;-)

Oh by the way, I have set up the domain name: www.savenetscape.org that loads the petition in a frame, along with some links to "interesting reading" articles below it.

Please if you are going to promote the petition, use www.savenetscape.org .
(If you do a whois you'll see that the domain name was registered a LONG time ago :). I'm lazy, I know, I'm TOO lazy, ...

I signed the petition, along with 210 others. While I'm skeptical that this will have any positive effect on AOL, the petition nevertheless gives me a great opportunity to stand for what I believe in. Go Netscape!

Former Netscape Composer author Daniel Glazman blogged it!

Postby fcassia » Mon 24 Nov, 2003 3:59 pm

The petition is doing better than I hoped. Over 210 signatures and counting, The vast majority are users of Netscape 7.1, and a shockingly high percentage say they would even pay a small annual fee to see Netscape development continued.

This should raise some eyebrows at AWOL, as most say they have Netscape.com as their home page.

Plus, Daniel Glazman, former head of Netscape/Mozilla Composer development (now working for LindowsOS designing the next open-source Frontpage and Macromedia Dreamweaver killer, nvu (www.nvu.org), has blogged my article on TheInquirer.net about this ("AOL may release a netscape-branded IE launcher", along with the "new navigator" screenshot.

Read what he had to say about this and AOL in his own words....

Hi Andrew,

I think it will have no effect on a huge conglomerate like Time Warner's America Online subsidiary. Their focus is $$ with no consideration given to the user. However, it does give us (the users) an opportunity to make a stand, and to voice our protest.

Anyone seen who's signed the 156th entry on the petition? Graham Norton, of all people!

The "Save The Netscape Browser" petition has now got it's first celebrity endorsement!
