Here's the tarball of the last MOZCLASSIC build...I have no knowledge of a binary you could get for a Communicator 5 Alpha.

And I'm not exactly sure of what you mean, plus I suppose you'd want a Netscape brand. I highly doubt such a thing ever existed, but you got me going. I posed this question on IRC and Jesus_X of MNews stated in response that:
Quote:
When the source \to what would have been Communicator 5.0 was released, there were limitedd binaries available, but they were very crashy, etc., and not production quality. There was no true "alpha" or beta, etc. It was later scrapped in favor of the NGLayout (gecko) powered NGFE (XUL).

He knows more about the history of Mozilla.org than I do (I came on a year or so before Netscape 6 came out). While you're probably aware of what he said, I'll include it anyway.

Sharky,
The someone-compiled-NS5 from the very source released by Netscape (before the Gecko engine).
I used to have a link for that, ask DJGM.

There is a very crashy and buggy pre-alpha quality developer version of
the Mozilla Gecko engine, with the same GUI as Netscape Communicator.
You can get the zipped up package here. It's worth a quick look, even
though it usually crashes and freezes on startup. Although it didn't
freeze up or crash my computer when I tried it you may not be
so lucky. Download this package AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Are you referring to a version of this?

28 Sep, 2002 8:59 am There is a pre-compiled Netscape 5 [sdp=2134]

There is a pre-compiled Netscape 5 based on the very first software code released by Netscape. (after removing security features, java...) Note: it is not Gecko engine.

Quote:
download our first release of Mozilla 5 (Netscape). This release is a compiled version of the source code released by Netscape. It has been modified very little if any only to get it to compile.

WARNING: This is a rough beta release. As such, it is not stable and you should not replace your current installation of Netscape with this version. Also, this release does not have some of the functions of earlier Netscape products such as Java, Email, and Security/Encryption. We have not had any catostrophic failures with our installation, and the majority of program crashes have occured with new features or while running another version of Netscape.

THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES AT ALL. WE TAKE NO RESPONSIBLITY NOR ASSUME ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES IT MAY CAUSE TO YOUR HARDWARE, SOFTWARE AND/OR DATA.

***DOWLOAD AND INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK***.

EDIT: This someone compiled Netscape 5 (mozilla5.zip, 4236 KB) is now mirrored locally.

. . . and that very rough beta release of "Mozilla 5", that Antony has just
mentioned, is available HERE. Like Antony said, this version does not use
the Netscape Gecko layout engine, but a somewhat broken version of the
rendering engine used in Communicator. Like the early pre-beta Gecko
version mentioned earlier in this thread, it's buggy, and quite crashy.

In other words, don't come running to us, if it fries your hard drive!
Well, it won't really do that, but don't expect good results from it.

Hmm. Sounds like an installation best avoided ... does it have an uninstall?

Answered me own question - no uninstall.

Isn't this build also at Netscape's FTP servers in pub/ngt_developer_release/devprev.zip?

If you are referring to the December 1998 Gecko developer preview mentioned above by DJGM, you are correct. This is a screen shot:

I'll clarify that another build was mentioned as well in this thread by Antony and others that was unofficially released earlier in 1998. This was an extremely rough Netscape 5.0 prototype that someone compiled from the source code released around that time. It does not use the Gecko rendering engine. This is a screenshot of that:

So there were, in a sense, two different versions of NS5: one based on Communicator and one based on Gecko?
