7.1 Crashes When Some Bookmarks Are used. IExplorer is fine

Postby robert » Tue 25 Nov, 2003 2:15 pm

When I click on Yahoo Games Collapse, Netscape closes out. How do I fix? I am using Internet Explorer to post this. BOb

Can you give the URL. I can try to do a Search, but it would help to have a link.
One comment: I have begun to dislike and not use anything Yahoo because they are stubbornly staying with IE. There have been sites which told me to "upgrade" my 7.1 to 4.8.

The page uses JAVA, so this is quite possibly a JAVA problem. Mozilla 1.5, using SUN JAVA 1.4.2, displayed this page fine.

Check your version of SUN JAVA by checking out the JAVA icon in the Control Panel. Click on the "about" tab. You can also open Netscape and click on Help|About Plug-ins.

A different version of SUN JAVA, newer or older, may or may not solve your problem. Just uninstall the old version, then install the newer one.

Please report back with the OS that you are using and what version of SUN JAVA that you have.

Others will probably have the details on where to find the latest SUN JAVA. They may also be able to offer more help.

Most interesting. I had given up on Java since 1.4.1.01 or .03 not sure which one first refused to configure the plugin for NS6. I had 1.3.1.06 working fine, and did not bother any more with Java settings.
I first checked K-meleon, and the applet loaded fine. Then I went to NS7.1, and again loaded fine, and played one game.
Then, I went to check which Java JRE was default, and was greeted with General Exception. So something may be wrong, but in spite of this I have had no problem. I will have to check it later.

First thing to try:

Open the Java Control Panel for version 1.4.1_02, go to the Advanced tab.
using the down arrow, change from "use java plugin default" to
"JRE 1.4.1_02 in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_02" or similar.

If that doesn't help:
UNinstall both Jav 1.3.1 versions and Java WebStart, if listed, from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Then reboot and see if that helps. If not,
you may need to uninstall the remaining Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02, reboot, remove any remaining Java plugins that may be left behind, then reinstall the J2re 1.4.1_02

For the record, Netscape 7.1 shipped with JRE 1.4.1_02... you can reinstall Netscape 7.1 if you still have the offline installer available, and add back the Sun Java component, if it comes to that.

7.1 Still Crashes

Postby robert » Wed 26 Nov, 2003 10:15 am

I uninstalled all Javas in the control panel and installed SE v1.4.2_01. Netscape still shuts down with a NETSCP.EXE message and an error reporting form. If I can not get this fixed soon, I will abandon Netscape. This is nuts. Thanks for your help.

Fixing errors like this requires patience and attention to detail.

Did you try my first suggestion?

What Java plugin versions do you show in Help About Plugins? (Check the other forum thread I referenced for more information)

Also post the exact NETSCP.EXE message you get that closes Netscape 7.1

7.1 crash

Postby robert » Wed 26 Nov, 2003 6:08 pm

I deleted all Javas and tried to log on to trouble site. I was directed to a Java website. The website said that my computer was running on an unknown platform. It downloaded Java 1.4.2_02. When that tried to install, I got this message: Java Update failed to apply changes.... Also ERROR 1722: There is a problem with this Windows Installation package A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. I also suspect that this new computer imported some Windows 95 files from the old computer. I hooked up a network cord and noticed that the computer was moving files without my direction. I have since reinstalled Netscape 7.1 with no change in the problem.

Looks like a failed Java Plugin installation.

I checked http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/install-windows.html and it says this:
=============copy/paste==============
When installing version 1.4.2 of Java 2 Runtime Environment or Java 2 SDK (using the default minimized download rather than the single executable), InstallShield requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 to be on your machine; if it is not found (or an older version is found), then InstallShield automatically tries to download Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0. If your machine is not on the Internet or is behind an authenticated proxy, the installation will fail at that point.

To proceed, simply use the Windows Offline Installer from the download page. Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 is included in this download.
=================end c/p============

So then, I would UNINSTALL the Java 2 Runtime Environment again, reboot, and do one of the following:

Get the Windows OFFLINE installer - use the Download J2SE v 1.4.2_02 (the link for Standard Edition 1.4.2_02 ) from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html - be sure to click the JRE link, not the SDK - it will eventually take you to a page that says:
You have chosen to download Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_02
* Download j2re-1_4_2_02-windows-i586-p.exe .
Filesize = 15,224,368 bytes.

Save the download to your desktop or other easy to find location. Exit your browser when the download is complete and close all running programs, and be sure to disable your antivirus program before running the j2re-1_4_2_02-windows-i586-p.exe file.

================OR=================

Get the earlier version 1.4.0_01, which I KNOW works with Yahoo Games (it's the version I use) and I KNOW it doesn't need the Windows Installer Package. Get it here:
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2 ... index.html

Also download the file, close the browser, etc. and install with your antivirus disabled.

Good luck.

P.S. you said that
The website said that my computer was running on an unknown platform

You haven't spoofed your useragent, have you?

7.1 Crash Resolved, Thank You, Alice

Postby robert » Mon 01 Dec, 2003 9:19 pm

I gave up and returned the computer for an identical exchange. Thank you, Alice for trying to help me. I am convinced that the new computer removed some faulty WIN95 files from my old computer when I had a network cord connected. All is well now. Netscape 7.1 works fine in the new computer. Bob
