*.txt web pages lose format with NS7.1

Postby stairs » Sat 20 Dec, 2003 6:38 pm

Just upgraded to 7.1 from 7.02 with no problems. However, web pages or files that are in .txt form retained the document format when viewed with 7.02 (and all earlier Netscapes) but lose their format when viewed with 7.1. It looks like the TABS are not read. Is there a setting I'm missing? Is there another simple format that will display in all browsers and retain the original format. I have some very large pages that I do not want to convert to HTML.

Thanks

Are you using the same profile of 7.02 for 7.1. Don't.

Can I assume from your answer that if you look at a text page, e.g., http://woodstairs.com/parts/hmpl.txt, that you see the prices in a straight column?

Sorry, in the spirit of proper punctuation I got the comma too close. The link is http://woodstairs.com/parts/hmpl.txt .

The link above looks the same in both my Netscape 7.02 and Mozilla 1.5 browsers under Windows 98. All prices line up just fine.

I no longer have a copy of Mozilla 1.4 (which is what Netscape 7.1 was based on) so I can not test it, although I noticed no similar problems with Mozilla 1.4 while I used it. Perhaps someone else with Netscape 7.1 can check this for you.

The first thing to check how you installed Netscape 7.1. You should not install 7.1 over 7.02. If you did, you should uninstall 7.1 and do a Clean Install as directed by Ramona.

I, personally, can not suggest a best approach to your problem. Problems with Netscape or Mozilla browsers may be program-issues or profile-issues. Uninstalling these browsers will not normally erase profiles, so profile-related issues are not cured by the uninstall process. I say this in case you decide to uninstall/install browsers. Someone may suggest that you create a new profile to see if this helps.

If it turns out to really be a Netscape 7.1 problem or you just wish to upgrade, you might consider moving to Mozilla 1.5 as long as you do not need the Netscape-specific features like IM and WebMail. To move to Mozilla 1.5, I would recommend uninstalling Netscape 7.1, backing up your profile info, and then installing Mozilla 1.5. I have had no problem in using old Netscape profiles for newer Mozilla browsers as long as you do not share one profile between two actively installed browsers. It is possible that others may disagree with me on this point.

I hope that others will continue to help you out after my limited advice.

Profman, thanks for the reply. I did follow Ramona's clean install (3 times) so I can do it in my sleep now. (Btw, Ramona, I had encrypted my passwords so copying the *.w and *.s files fails.) Each reinstall initially showed my text page in order. However, when I got everything setup the way I wanted it, the text was misaligned again. Turns out, I had selected "Tahoma" font for the monospace font in the preferences. Duh! There are more ways to mess up than anyone can track!
Thanks

Profman, I notice you have 7.02 and Mozilla 1.5 together. To do the same can I just install M1.5 to a new directory then create a new profile for M1.5, copying the selected files per the fresh install instructions?
Thanks

Before you install Mozilla 1.5, create a new, disposable Netscape profile so that you have more than one profile. This will cause Mozilla 1.5 to bring up its Profile Manager after you install it, and you can then choose the new "throw-away" profile. Then, with Mozilla, create a new profile for use only with Mozilla. You may then transfer over whatever info you want from the Netscape profile to the new Mozilla profile.

Mozilla 1.5 will install into a location separate from Netscape so nothing special needs to be done during installation.

I actually have Netscape 7.02 and Mozilla 1.5 sharing bookmarks (not hard) and a few E-mail accounts (a bit harder).

Come back if you have more questions so that I or others might try to help you.

[I've been gone from here for a bit due to the holidays. Sorry about that.]
